Parable from the plague in the 1300's

Our pastor told this last Sunday morning.

In the 1300's in England, a farmer was taking a wagon load of produce to town to sell in the market.  He noticed a strange looking figure on the side of the road.  The figure asked if he was going to town, and, if he was, would he mind giving a ride to him.  The farmer told him to hop on the wagon, and he would take him to town.

On the way, the farmer asked the figure who he was.  The figure replied that he was The Plague, and was going to town to kill 12 people.  The farmer protested, but the Plague said that the 12 people were all old and near death.  the farmer dropped the Plague off in town, and proceeded to the market.

After selling his produce, he went home.  In a few days, he heard that hundreds, then thousands had died in the town.

A few days later, while working in the field, he noticed the same figure coming down the road.  He went to it, and said, "You lied to me.  You said you were going to kill 12 old people, and I hear that thousands have died".  The Plague replied,"I only killed the 12 old people.  The rest died of fright."
