Senate Dems propose additional $200 in monthly Social Security benefits

beneteaubeneteau Member Posts: 8,552 ✭✭✭

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, along with several other top Democratic senators, rolled out a plan that would increase Social Security benefits for Americans amid the coronavirus outbreak rocking the nation.

Schumer, D-N.Y., Sens. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and Ron Wyden, D-Ore., unveiled the plan Saturday, which would increase the monthly benefit for those receiving Social Security Veterans, and Supplemental Security Income by $200 through 2021.

The senators said the measure would help to stabilize the economy, and give seniors, veterans and people with disabilities an additional $4,000 over the next two years.

Hey, I'll take it.

Is that in lieu of, or in addition to, the stimulus checks being discussed?  What about the millions of Americans who collect pensions from state, county and municipalities who aren't covered by SS? They are on fixed income as well.

DEMOCRATs ought to end the taxation on Social Security that they the DEMOCRATs passed into law during the Clinton regime.

    Taxing SS is pure BS!

Instead of pandering to a special interest group (social security recipients such as myself), a better idea would be to increase the standard deduction by 50%. That automatically reduces the tax paid on SS benefits, as it aids everyone. All the people put out of work by governors such as Polis-the-Great of Colorado would benefit.

Many of us that receive Social Security still work part time, as I do. I just started receiving my SS benefits at the beginning of the year at 69. They limit the amount I can make annually, to still receive my benefits. I'm not working this season due to the virus outbreak in Italy. I completely understand the intent of the measure.

I still work full tome and my SS is not limited.  The limit only applies if you retire before your full retirement age, i.e. at 62.  Now taxes is another thing, 85% of my SS is taxed.

Unless I read that OP wrong I don't think they are saying they will raise ALL SS but those receiving SSI and Vets "SSI"

Why don't we go to school and work on the weekends and take the week off!

SSI is for seniors with low assets/income I assume Veterans is a kick for those having served but not able to find anything specific to veterans social security other than extra earnings credited for specific times served.

If your on SS you don,t need the extra money because of the Chinese virus. If your going to be Laid off account of the Chinese virus that only makes sense to me. I’m retired and the virus has not effected my income one bit, if I’m in debt that is my own doings and not the fault of anyone else. Their just trying to make Trump look bad. I really do believe these Liberals would be willing to bankrupt and destroy this country just to get their own way. Shameful absolutely shameful.

Gee that will just get me back to where I should be because they stole $360.00 a month when I got my SS.

Not for long. For these giveaways by the government with Congress means one thing, inflation. I doubt no one is buying 30 or 50 year Treasury Bonds at 1%. It's either bite the bullet or get more taxes from we the people.
How long can The Federal Reserve buy their own paper and run two sets of books and get away with it?

The problem with stimulus money is that the people who receive it seldom spend it on anything which stimulates the economy. Send the typical American $1,000 and he (or she) will use it to make their car payment or continue to make the minimum payment on their maxed out credit cards. I doubt that anyone will rush out to buy the new washer-dryer  or a big ticket item,  they'll simply use it to service existing debt, which benefits no one except the lending institutions who were bailed out in 2009.

There is a line in the classic film Deliverance where Bobby, the character played by Ned Beatty, says "My God, there's no end to it."

You're probably right. At least now I won't feel guilty for using my check on that M1 Garand tattoo I've always wanted.
