    You have to be a little twisted to enjoy Poe's stories. I do.
    I read 'The Tell-Tale Heart' when I was 10 or 12, never read it again, but remember it pretty well.
    In the story you mention, it is ironic that the fortress where they isolated themselves (by welding the doors shut)  ensured that they could not escape once the disease arrived. I haven't seen the movie, but I imagine it follows the story closely.

    I remember seeing the movie back in the day - Vincent Price torturing his victims made me squirm.

    There was a later version released in 1989, but I haven't seen that one.
