I learned I was doing it WRONG... bet you are too.

Yup, all these years of doing it wrong has me flummoxed and worried silly.  I have always put silverware in the dishwasher holder handles up.  I learned from the internet that it is wrong to do this, I was shocked.  Only sharp knives should be put in handles up.  I always figured that handling the eating part of the spoon or fork while unloading was icky but "experts" say no. I have been eating off of apparently dirty forks and spoons for decades.  Do you think the Government has a regulation against my method, could I be in legal jeopardy?

I've taken care of  patients that have cut themselves on knives that were placed blade up in the dishwasher.  A couple of them were cut pretty bad.   I never understood why someone would do that.

YES, for good reason, I have been stuck doing it with blades up. I think the TV can go to hell.

I have always loaded the dishwasher with spoons, forks, and table knives with the functioning end up.  The reason is that then when I unload it, I can grab all of the spoons at once so it is faster putting them in the silverware drawer.
Sharp knives are always hand washed so I don't stab myself at 5 in the morning when unloading.

Yes to the no sharp knives comments above. I meant table knives above. My wife will still put the chef's knife in the DW, and then complain that it's dull. I keep telling her, "Well..." but she refuses to believe me.

It took a while but I finally convinced my wife that the 'sharp' knives need to be hand washed.

    Same.

I treat my dishwasher with a little pinch to the behind and a gentle kiss to the back of her neck as she is washing those sharp objects and such.    After all, a happy wife means a happy life!  Clean dishes and silverware is just one of the perks! :)
