NFS park closed-millennials go anyway-get cars towed

jimdeerejimdeere Member, Moderator Posts: 26,277 ******
Near me there’s a waterfall that is a popular day hike. Ran by the National Forestry Service. The parking area and trail is closed due to the China virus. A bunch of millennials and college kids decided to park on the road leading to the trailhead and go hiking. State police had their cars towed. Live and learn.

Doesn't make any sense at all to me to close down any outdoor NFS areas.

I agree, drobs.  But a pretty day like today the site would have been slammed with people. There is one toilet at the trailhead.

Is that the Cascades near Pembroke? Got a relative (millennial) who lives nearby there. Because she isn't seeing direct effects out that way, she claims the coronavirus is just govt hype/conspiracy. Wouldn't be surprised if she was one up there.

So these millennials had enough sand to challenge an over reaching government, good for them.   There is hope for the future.

They were parking in people’s yards and blocking the road, so...

Almost 70% of Idaho is public land. They ain't gonna shut that down.

And if they do shut down the trailheads, I know enough Ranchers whose private ground borders the forest that I can park my horse trailer on private ground and still access most the places I go.

dpmule, can you guys ride atv’s on BLM land out there?
  • AlpineAlpine Member Posts: 15,092 ✭✭✭✭
Yes. You can ride on trails. The only areas off limits to ORV is wilderness areas in both forests and BLM land.

I retired from the USFS..I understand, they are shut down by Federal regs..Presidents call...people don't get it..one person in that group has a cough or?..everyone there can be exposed, and carry it home to others..causing the one case of Covid-19 to rapidly develop into God knows how many overnight..sometimes dealing with the public, was the one thing I hated most....Loko

Only areas designated as such..not all USFS and BLM land..atv or motorcycle use is what I am referring to..

They're millennials; they don't give a crap about anyone or anything except themselves. The "Me-Me" generation.
    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

On the Jefferson National Forest, if you are caught riding an ATV, it’s $750 and impounded ATV.

I worked on the Monongahela NF for 23 years..White sulphur Sprs RD...We gave out no warnings..if game was involved..we called WVDNR ..the fines were stiffer and they usually lost their ATVs..

I know for a fact that WVDNR don’t mess around.

On a similar note, the above mentioned waterfalls, every year one or two idiots fall off the top. There are several signs posted warning of the danger. One time, the District ranger showed up and told my EMS friends that they were absolutely not taking an ATV up to get the injured. My friend who was Chief said “Pack it up, boys. This lady is responsible for rescuing the victim.”
Our Sheriff showed up just in time and convinced her to reconsider.

sounds like a personal exp..lol..I worked weekly with one and you are right,He took his job very seriously..we would have to work overtime the 2 weeks of WV deer gun season..He and I rode together everyday in a USFS truck...camps full of out of state hunters never expected to see a DNR wildlife officer step out when I pulled up..this guy was huge..6'6 and weighed about 325lb and was well known for handling his business..we had 10 atvs in a warehouse He confiscated from bear hunters, who had cut locks off a closed USFS road ,so they could gain access to where a bear had been chased in a hollow...the impound also included 5 trucks..all were sold at auction by the state..hard lesson to learn for some

Can't see how staying in a house full of other people is safer than being outdoors. One person gets sick, everybody gets it. Outside at least not directly breathing each others air. All the hand washing is just to make folks feel like they are doing something to help.

I can’t disagree with you. There’s a 30mph wind outside right now. Any virus germs would get blown into the next county.
