Meme Dump dissenting opinion thread

SoreShoulderSoreShoulder Member Posts: 3,148 ✭✭✭
edited October 2024 in General Discussion
There are two different posts in the Meme Dump Thread showing a painter and a drywall worker who had been wearing surgical masks and still got their face covered with paint or drywall plaster dust.

First of all, no one works in a Covid-19 virus spray booth.  No one is saturated with the virus the way those two were.  What happened is their masks filled up and then the air started mostly bypassing the mask and going in around the nose and other small gaps.  That's not going to happen with the virus.  The surgical masks may only catch a percentage of incoming particles, but that still increases your chances of not getting ill if you walk past an infected person.

Second of all, the main reason for them is to stop the wearer from spraying infectious droplets.  If those guys had a mouth full of paint or drywall dust, and they coughed, the mask would catch most of it.

This person doesn't have "it" and therefore can't spread "it" which is why he does not wear a mask unless it is mandated and the place being visited is not optional.

    Same here.

It was a meme, not a PSA.

Sounds like you could stand to wear 2 mask. One on both ends.

What is a "MEME"  thread/post?  It's tough to find cheap entertainment today :#

Bring back the meme thread.  Most entertaining thread ever.

It got poofed because some people kept posting prohibited content (i.e. scantily-clad women).

Scantily clad women is probably a public service on the GB web site.  Since as a group we are a bunch of old farts, a hot little number just might help keep our hearts beating a little stronger.     :D      :p       :D

The forum is not being run by consensus. Warnings about content were issued and summarily ignored by certain members who feel that they are above following the rules. The decision was made to lock the thread, and it stands. You can bemoan the loss of the greatest waste of bandwidth since Sugar Bear, which is also never to return, or move on with your lives. In either case, the outcome will not change.

Yep, and memes with vulgar language (F-bombs, etc). Like Mr. C said, several warnings were issued but to no avail.

Mark, is it possible for a meme thread to return, or is it a blanket "for all time" ban?

According to the CDC, masks are useless in preventing the spread of a respiratory virus, therefore the CDC recommends that we always wear a mask because that is the only way to prevent the spread of a respiratory virus.

No. The moderator who I placed in charge of the thread, a man with far more patience than I would ever have, locked it and I am not about to overrule his judgement call. I'd be a pretty poor admin (although a few here already feel that way) if I didn't back up my moderator's decisions. Those moderator decisions included the re-banning of remote Girl, as well as locking or deleting other threads and posts, to which I had turned a blind eye.

This is essentially collective punishment. Cruel, but effective.

    Thanks Mark.

The Rules/posting guidelines have been in place since day one.  They have been broken and enforced just as long.
The meme dump thread started out fun. Then there were a few bad post here and there. Then more, and more.  Then the number of offenders grew, and grew. I issued more than one warning of what was going to happen.  Those warnings were ignored, and the number of offenders/ offenses continued to grow.  I then kept my end of the bargain and LOCKED the thread, not POOFED.  The thread can be brought up on your page by doing an archive search, for your viewing pleasure.

I/we (MODS, ADMIN)  could have locked out each offender, but did not.
I decided to leave them in the pond with the other fish and let peer pressure work in my favor.  Then I don't have to expel the energy to push the BAN button.  Yes, I too have one.

Threads with a meme here and there is fine with me, as long as it fits within the posting guidelines.  A full blown meme thread? NO!!
    Thank you.

Let me expand on what Joe said, because I'm the one who saddled him with the task of monitoring the Meme thread, a task which he performed diligently and with my full approval. Moderating is not an easy job. Two out of three moderators end up resigning. We've all seen it: they simply have enough, throw in the towel, and revert to the comfort and safety of being a member.

Moderators do have the power to ban offending members, but I am unaware of any moderator actually doing this. it is not a pleasant task to remove someone from our forum- well, sometimes it is! B) so that duty is typically reserved for Nunn or myself.

Although now far fewer in number, there remain several members who ignore the rules and simply cannot follow instructions. We had a situation a week ago where a member had been warned not to use a specific phrase. He chose to ignore that instruction, and he is currently waiting out his two week ban.

There is no free speech here. This forum is owned and operated by Gun Broker, and all of us are guests in Gun Broker's house. I don't make the rules of this forum, but as an admin, I am charged with interpreting those rules and implementing any punishment which I feel fits the violation. I can't make it plainer than that.

I don't think Rocky was suggesting bringing back the one that was locked. I think he was speaking of meme threads in the future that follows all the rules.

Sugar Bear was a long running thread started by a pawnbroker who was, or I suppose still is, a member of this forum. The thread was long and rambling, totally disjointed and with no real direction or purpose. These are all of the things which I dislike, but despite prevailing opinion, I don't control all forum content. If a thread doesn't violate posting guidelines, it gets to stay, regardless of its being agenda driven, endlessly repetitive and expounding the same dogma over and over again.

Getting back to Sugar Bear: Admin, by which I mean a genuine paid administrator at Gun Broker HQ, had enough. He locked the Sugar Bear thread and added a codicil that anyone who unlocked the thread, meaning any moderator or administrator, would suffer dire consequences for doing so.

As is always the case, Sugar Bear has a fan club who occasionally lobby for it to be unlocked and reinstated in the forum. That won't happen, or not until I get the okay from GBHQ.

I believe in delegating, which I feel is a sign of good leadership. When I gave Joe authority over the meme thread I placed him in charge, and he is still in charge.  He said that occasional threads with a meme here and there are fine, as long as it fits within the posting guidelines.  He gave an emphatic NO to another full blown meme thread

I OK'd her return, and had to eat crow when she was sent packing. As I said, a lot of threads which I turned a blind eye to...or even participated in, were locked by moderators who made the call that content in those threads was unsuitable for the forums.

As an admin, I interpret the rules, but I am not above the rules.

Even so, I can use all of the memes I want to:

Thanks for running a tight ship............this is the one forum I return to. Not as interesting as it was back in the day.......and I have not made it back "in" to the clique..........since my years long absence.......I'm trying though......been here 17 yrs........bought and sold, and have had good experiences all way around.

Turning the forum into a "closed shop," by which I mean forum member must also be a part of the GB auctions, whether or not  they actively participate in the auctions, cost us a lot of good members. A lot of people don't like the concept of auctions; whether sitting in front of their monitor, or sitting in an auditorium an physically bidding. The guys were not freeloaders, they were simply interested in the forums and not the auctions.

Hell, if you live in California, no one will sell you anything, so why bother with the auctions?

Speaking of mods, administrators, and owners etc on Internet forums. Do any of you all remember a guy that went by the name Para on the old S&W forum? He had an eagle as his Avatar? I always thought well of that guy. That group on the old S&W forum were a good bunch of guys. Who ever it was that took over that forum when Para left was a real *. I posted a picture of obama in his witch doctor outfit during the obama care ordeal and got banned for it. Evidently he was a flaming liberal.

The double standard of what is acceptable on the forums vs what is OK on the auction side has been around for ages.

    I’m disappointed but not surprised.

  • mohawk600mohawk600 Member Posts: 5,529 ✭✭✭✭

Mohawk you were never out of the clique just let your subscription lapse or went walkabout while life happened...

Mark has said No at least 3 times so this is no longer consensual it's Date Assault...

    Mike

Thanks, Mike......I just let life happen and quit forums for awhile......I made it back though. This is a good forum.

It is too bad that members were lost because they weren't on the auction side. Why not just sign up there to be able to remain here? Nobody has to buy or sell. Just my two cents.
