Tonight is the first I've ever heard of or seen one.  Pretty cool.

I never heard of one before either. Quick research says Chinese and the rings can give an indication of the quality and strength of the thrust or swing by listening to the clicks they make. I think their invention of gunpowder tops this but this is much cooler looking. Bob

That was the final test project on last night's Forged in Fire episode (Season Finale). It was supposedly an actual battle sword, but it is a ridiculous one. Those silly rings make the thing heavier and harder to swing, and almost completely prevent deep slicing penetration.
    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

I liked the Paul Chen's Dao. No jangly bits.

No one made a good one either. It's a horrible design.
Some will die in hot pursuit
    And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
    While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
    Coming down the mountain
