So, yes, I do have a facebook account.  Keep up with extended family and distant friends.  One family member replied to a thread started by one of their friends.  They were exhorting everyone to be ever vigilant in their quest to remain virus free, wear your mask, social distance, no large gatherings, sanitize everything.

This is what had me puzzled and why I didn't step into that discussion.  This friend was bemoaning that fact that he contracted the virus.  Rough "flu" like symptoms for about four days and then improved.  Anywho, this friend said he had followed all the protocols vigilantly.  He didn't go into public unless necessary, washed his hands, wore his mask, six feet apart when in public, sanitized everything.  His point was "folks this is real.  Do what they tell you."

I so wanted to chime in and say WHY?  You did all the "correct things" and still contracted it.  So, dude were you lying when you said you did everything we are told to do, or are all these safety precautions just a bunch of hooey?  I bit my internet tongue and puzzled about the stupidity of the point in the discussion.

Most people wear a mask but few wear a face shield. The virus enters thru the eyes so if he wasn’t wearing safety glasses or a face shield he was SOL. Some kind of gloves help also. We were sitting in church when the wife and I got it. The health department said probably thru the eyes is how over 30 in our church got it.

Susie, I think an awful lot of us would like to chime in and say Why? But we don't. Open heart surgery four years ago and COPD here. Neighbors, cluster families with lots of kids on my street. Swimming pool and cook outs constantly. No one wears a mask or social distance. No one sick either since this whole thing started. In Monroe NY I do what King Cuomo dictates but if i were at my 2nd home in Kents Store, Va. out in the boonies I would probably ignore all this BS. What I worry about is how long before you must be tested and registered or you can't leave your house. And worse still you will have the vaccine regardless if you leave your house or not. When Grandpa was fighting in the trenches you either got it or you didn't. Yes, a lot died then too. Remember hunting whitetails in Adirondacks one year and over run with chipmunks. Next year almost none. They spread their germs around and killed each other I guess. Hell, I am no expert maybe it is God's way.-------------------Ray

It just hurts my one good brain cell to think about it.  You do everything you are supposed to do and still get it.  Or, you follow none of the protocols and skate on by.  It just has my head spinning sometimes.

Is there any down side to doing the things the CDC recommends?

Perhaps your friend was not as cautious as he believed he was.

Or maybe we should base our national pandemic strategy around your friends facebook post.

More to the whole story of this so called pandemic than the govt is telling us. So folks get it by staying home not having contact..virtually a hermit. It is transmitted somehow. Like Pollen? Maybe those chinese seeds coming in the mail is the second dose. Nothing more than germ warfare. First dose was a test. Lethal dose can be made.

(green font) Everyone knows anecdotes are more accurate than a doctors advice. I always go to social media for my medical diagnosis. That way I can find someone to tell me what I want to hear instead of those pesky educated opinions. Bob

Umm.......well.....yeah. Do we need to destroy the economy of a whole nation? Susie's friend had "Rough "flu" like symptoms for about four days and then improved." I guess the guy has never been sick before. This country needs to be wide open.

    Yes.
As HPD states, the destruction of our economy and the ballooning of our debt, both of which will punish the next couple of generations for their entire lives.

As second downside is that following CDC guidelines will most likely not decrease the total number of infections or deaths, rather it will spread them over 12 months vs. 5 or 6, further complicating the economic destruction we are seeing.

It is not an all or nothing proposition, of course.  Either way we need to do what we can to protect the vulnerable as much as is possible.  In one scenario we do it for a year.  In one, particularly had we started a while ago, we get it substantially over in half that time.

When the Unicorns fly in with a multi-billion dollar vaccine, however, all will be well.
Freedom and a submissive populace cannot co-exist.

Why? Well I say it's a designed war lab Wuhan virus with multi prong attributes of Attack. Mankind is playing with things they never should have started but it's too late. Wait until tactical nukes starts flying, with neutron blast of local intensity  in your area.

A neutron bomb, officially defined as a type of enhanced radiation weapon (ERW), is a low yield thermonuclear weapon designed to maximize lethal neutron radiation in the immediate vicinity of the blast while minimizing the physical power of the blast itself. The neutron release generated by a nuclear fusion reaction is intentionally allowed to escape the weapon, rather than being absorbed by its other components.[3] The neutron burst, which is used as the primary destructive action of the warhead, is able to penetrate enemy armor more effectively than a conventional warhead, thus making it more lethal as a tactical weapon.

Even with our reduced nuclear arsenal the U.S. has the ability to turn half the world into a wasteland. Even the Chinese aren't stupid enough to risk that. Bob

Ir not a city metropolitan type Nuke destroyer,It's a tactical nuke that fries the combatants with a big flash that microwaves the troops and inside tanks too. They all say they would not use one first but then if you corner a rat they will turn and fight if they can't run.

One way to answer this puzzle is to look at history, specifically the history of China’s neutron bomb program. From 1977 to 1988 China developed a neutron bomb, more formally known as an enhanced radiation weapon. Neutron bombs are specialized tactical nuclear weapons (TNW) with reduced blast effects and enhanced radiation.

The U.S. Dismantled the last neutron bomb in 2003. I am fully aware of their capabilities and drawbackc. They are effective against a non-nuclear opponent when the aggressor wants to take over land and infrastructure. They are not very effective against a nuclear opponent that can fight back with the capability to destroy both population and infrastructure. Bob

I'm sure mine won't be the most original comments, but as to how a person gets infected it reminds me of a comment made by an IRA type regarding protection for the Royal Family.  Words to the effect "they have to be right all the time, we have to be right just once".  A person can cover up and be diligent 99.9% of the time and still catch it.  Which points out much of the futility in all this.  I think it's no surprise that NY got hit hard and is now doing OK, while CA did OK at the start and is getting hit now.  All that covering up made for ample pickings when CA loosened up.
I went through the 1958 flu (about 115K dead) as an infant and the 1968 flu (about 130K dead) when the population was about 180M.  If we end up around 250K dead, and accounting for our about 320M population, we end up statistically where we were 60 and 50 years ago.  Would it have been higher without the masks and distancing?  Beats me.  I think nature has a habit of running its course despite man's folly that it can control the outcome.

Flattening the Curve means you turn a short-duration/high-amplitude graph into a long-duration/low-amplitude graph.  The area under the curve remains the same... approximately the same numbers are going to be infected and their outcomes will be good or bad.  Absent a vaccine, our hope is to develop herd immunity as the virus burns itself out.

Seems like some think nuclear war can't happen because we have such a large arsenal of nukes. In other words mutual destruction if you dare launch. Still I wonder about accidental launch and then you have nuts like fat man and Idi Amin who got his jollies by shooting elephants with .50 machine gun. People like that don't need the blessing of their citizens to launch a attack. The crazies are out there.

Have you ever noticed that people that wear masks touch there face I would say 5 to 7 times more than someone that doesn't wear a mask.  You can tell those that wear a mask to be politically correct, they see you in a parking lot, or 20 to 30 foot away from you in a store, and they make this dash to come over to you and point at their mask shaking their finger, while pointing at their mask expecting you to drop everything and pull your mask up, any more I just look at them and say; no thanks, I don't smoke!  Some of the looks of bafflement on their face. What I really want to say is take that ship off your face and stay away from me. Masks give people a false sense of security. Treat this Chinese virus as if it were the flu season and you haven't had a flu shot and you will be alright. Apparently this person dropped the ball somewhere along the line. It is up to the individual to protect him self, and not rely on others to protect you.

If I don’t have Corona and the people around me don’t have Corona, what purpose does the mask serve?

The Chinese Communist will use them if they had to.If anybody thinks That China government is more civilized Than N. Korea then they are deluded. The Communist in Asia are Psychopaths on steroids.  The USA is not going to nuke The Chinese
Population but they will/would use a small tactical Nuke to bomb a military target. Conventional warfare will not stop China.
And the saber rattling is heating up big time in The South China Sea.

the virus will be over shortly after november

Yesterday I was talking with a good friend and neighbor who is a retired medical doctor of international reputation. Over the many years, he has practiced in Africa, Asia, South America, and North America. We were discussing the COVID-19 situation, and I commented, "It seems that other than the hope of a vaccine coming along, the assumption is that eventually the virus will simply go away."
He informed me that the virus will not go away, but eventually everyone will have been exposed to it and developed immunity just as happened 100 years ago. He continued, telling me that in his opinion, the current "controls" of social distancing and mask wearing, are simply postponing the time when universal immunity will occur.
