Hair Donations For Children...

Our youngest son, who lives in Everett, WA, has been working from home since this past March due to the virus attack. He was recently informed that he'll be working at home until at least the 1st of next year which is 4 more months.

During the past 5 months that he's been working at home he hasn't had his hair cut and it's getting very long so he has decided not to get it cut until it's at least the minimum length to donate for children with cancer. According to Locks of Love's website it should be a minimum of 12" long before it's cut.

His wife, whose hair was down below her knees a few years ago, donated her hair when she had it cut.

I think that's a nice thing to do for those children that's been struck with that terrible disease.

I was thinking I might do the same but my son told me they probably wouldn't accept two 12" long hairs. Smart aleck kid!  :)

I had the same idea until I checked into it.

The organizations (most with names that tug at your heart strings) that accept the hair donations are extremely selective - No grey hair (leaves me out), must be certain length (fairly long) and in perfect condition,  They claim it takes about a dozen donations to make one wig and in the end, most donations go in the dumpster.
And...the very small percentage of donations that are acceptable are ACTUALLY SOLD to wig companies. (because they are extremely valuable).

I won't say all, but at least, some organizations appear to be scamming to create a free source of quality hair for high-dollar wigs!
I'm at a loss on how to insure my hair goes to someone who can use it.

I can't believe they misspelled "Pork and Beans!"

I've been checking the organizations out and it appears that Locks of LoveWigs for Kids, and Pantene Beautiful Lengths are 3 legit charities.

    Good for you.
I don't think most people bother to check out "charities".  Specifically those claiming to help children or veterans.

Been growing my hair out too. They will take gray hair, some even pay for it if long enough and in good health. They just dye it and all is good. Not like your wig is going to get gray roots, lol.

But yea, the scam charities are just fishing for top shelf hair to resell, so just sell it and donate cash and then they can buy a wig.

You must be proud of her. She sounds like a caring young lady. There's still a lot of good kids out there unlike what they show on the TV news these days.

About 10 years ago I took a little 12 y.o. pal to have her beautiful long hair (halfway down her back) to be cut and donated.  We both felt really good at the time.  After reading this I wonder if it was just trashed.  I wish I hadn't read this!

not to sound cold Jeff, but what if it was, you and the young lady did the right thing and felt good about it, what happens after that is out of your control, my granddaughter has given twice her and the family feel good about it, if it was misused she is only out a foot or so of hair. I allways figured Karma will catch these people in the end...

Hopefully you know how I feel about pediatric oncology issues at this point...

    Thank you.

    Mike

Yes we do Mike. We know you spend a lot of time with the children and that you've helped so many of them with this disease even though you were barely able to stand at times you still find a way to help the children. I can't help but to believe that you will be rewarded for this work someday.

hillbillie, you're not cold just accurate.  We both had a warm & fuzzy feeling after and that should be the end of the story.
