Montana.  Getting the heck out of Oregone.  It'll be in April of next year for me so I can get started on the house and August for my wife, after she retires.
We're in a little rental house in the interim that a friend of ours is letting us have for taxes and insurance.
Hopefully we've timed this right and are catching the market while it's at a high.  The low interest rates are gonna help!

Got some!   The last few years the winters here in La Grande have been as bad or worse than what they had in the area we're heading to.
I would much rather deal with cold in the winter than heat in the summer, much over 65 and I'm miserable.

The Flathead Valley is a beautiful slice of this planet, NeoBlackdog.  Impossible not to fall in love with it, IMO.

Very, very happy for you and your Mrs., Steve. Wife and I are trying to get out of this liberal cesspool also, just don't know where to go yet. Have looked at Montana, but not sure if it's conservative enough for us, since there are a few conservative states that are run by a few liberal cities. Never know though, maybe we'll be neighbors... What town are you looking at in the big sky state?

We'll be outside of Kalispell, Toad.  A little bigger town than I'd like, but the deal we got on the land will make it doable.
Besides, once the house is done, I've got a lot of fishin' to do!

Good move to Montana, although I saw a bumper sticker in Missoula a few years ago, that said, "Montana is full.  North Dakota still has a lot of room!"

This sounds great except for one thing!   Winter!  IF I had lots of money, you know, if, the biggest word in the English language!!  I would live somewhere out west in the summer, here in S.C. in the winter.  I don't think I can do a Montana winter anymore.  But I'm real happy for you that you are going to be living your dream!!!

    Moving to Montana, eh?    :#

    Diary of a Snow Shoveler

December 9: We woke to a beautiful blanket of crystal white snow covering every inch of the landscape. What a fantastic sight! Can there be a more lovely place in the whole world? Moving here was the best idea I've ever had. I shoveled snow for the first time in years and felt like a boy again. I did both our driveway and the sidewalks. This afternoon the snowplow came along and covered up the sidewalks and closed in the driveway, so I got to shovel again! What a perfect life.

December 12: The sun has melted all our lovely snow. Such a disappointment. My neighbor tells me not to worry, we'll definitely have a white Christmas. No snow on Christmas would be awful! Bob says we'll have so much snow by the end of winter, that I'll never want to see snow again. l don't think that's possible. Bob is such a nice man - I'm glad he's our neighbor.

December 14: Snow, lovely snow! 8" last night. The temperature dropped to -20. The cold makes everything sparkle so. The wind took my breath away, but I warmed up by shoveling the driveway and sidewalks. This is the life! The snowplow came back this afternoon and buried everything again. l didn't realize I would have to do quite this much shoveling, but I'll certainly get back in shape this way. I wish l wouldn't huff and puff so.

December 15: 20 inches forecast. Sold my van and bought a 4x4 Blazer. Bought snow tires for the wife's car and 2 extra shovels. Stocked the freezer. The wife wants a wood stove in case the electricity goes out. I think that's silly. We aren't in Alaska, after all.

December 16: Ice storm this morning. Fell on my butt on the ice in the driveway putting down salt. Hurt like hell. The wife laughed for an hour, which I think was very cruel.

December 17: Still way below freezing. Roads are too icy to go anywhere. Electricity was off for 5 hours. I had to pile the blankets on to stay warm. Nothing to do but stare at the wife and try not to irritate her. Guess I should've bought a wood stove, but won't admit it to her. God I hate it when she's right. I can't believe I'm freezing to death in my own living room.

December 20: Electricity's back on, but had another 14" of stupid snow last night. More shoveling. Took all day. That stupid snowplow came by twice. Tried to find a neighbor kid to shovel, but they said they're too busy playing hockey. I think they're lying. Called the only hardware store around to see about buying a snow blower and they're out. Might have another shipment in March. I think they're lying. Bob says I have to shovel or the city will have it done and bill me. I think he's lying.

December 22: Bob was right about a white Christmas because 13 more inches of the white stuff fell today, and it's so cold it probably won't melt till August. Took me 45 minutes to get all dressed up to go out to shovel and then I had to use the restroom. By the time I got undressed, went and dressed again. I was too tired to shovel. Tried to hire Bob who has a plow on his truck for the rest of the winter; but he says he's too busy. I think the jerk is lying.

December 23: Only 2" of snow today. And it warmed up to 0. The wife wanted me to decorate the front of the house this morning. What is she, nuts? Why didn't she tell me to do that a month ago? She says she did, but I think she's lying.

December 24: 6" today. Snow packed so hard by snowplow, l broke the shovel. Thought I was having a heart attack. If I ever catch the jerk who drives that snowplow, I'll drag him through the snow by his balls. I know he hides around the corner and waits for me to finish shoveling and then he comes down the street at about 100 miles an hour and throws snow all over where I've just been! Tonight the wife wanted me to sing Christmas carols with her and open our presents, but I was busy watching for that stupid snowplow.

December 25: Merry Christmas. 20 more inches of the %^@3D@x@!x!x slop tonight. Snowed in. The idea of shoveling makes my blood boil. God I hate the snow! Then the snowplow driver came by asking for a donation and I hit him over the head with my shovel. The wife says I have a bad attitude. I think she's an idiot. If I have to watch "It's a Wonderful Life" one more time, I'm going to kill her.

December 26: Still snowed in. Why the hell did I ever move here? It was all HER idea. She's really getting on my nerves.

December 27: Temperature dropped to -35 and the pipes froze.

December 28: Warmed up to above -20. Still snowed in. THAT WOMAN is driving me crazy!!!!!

December 29: 10 more inches. Bob says I have to shovel the roof or it could cave in. That's the silliest thing I ever heard. How dumb does he think I am?

December 30: Roof caved in. The snow plow driver is suing me for a million dollars. The wife went home to her mother. 9" predicted.

December 31: Set fire to what's left of the house. No more shoveling.

January 8: I feel so good. I just love those little white pills they keep giving me. Why am I tied to the bed?

    Great post, Nanuq!   :D
We're set up with the shovels, a 24" tracked snowblower, and a Kubota 4WD tractor with a 72" snow blower mounted on the front.  The tractor has a cab so I can send the wife out to deal with the snow!!!  (We'll see how that works out!)

Just keep your attitude right and you'll love winter.  It doesn't all have to be shoveled the first day!

YOU KNOW YOU'RE FROM ALASKA (MONTANA) IF..........
You only know three spices - salt, pepper and ketchup. You design your Halloween costume to fit over a snowsuit. The mosquitoes have landing lights. You have more miles on your snowblower than your car. You have 10 favorite recipes for moose meat. You live in a house that has no front step, yet the door is one meter above the ground. You've taken your kids trick-or-treating in a blizzard. Driving is better in the winter because the potholes are filled in with snow. You owe more money on your snowmobile than your car. The local paper covers national and international headlines on 1/4 page, but requires 6 pages for sports and the fishing report. At least twice a year, the kitchen doubles as a meat processing plant. The most effective mosquito repellent is a shotgun. You've had a snowblower stuck on the roof. You think the start of moose season is a national holiday. You head south to go to your cabin. You frequently clean grease off the barbeque so bears won't prowl on your deck. You know which leaves make good toilet paper. You find -40F a little chilly. The trunk of your car doubles as a deep freeze. You attend a formal event in your best clothes, your finest jewelry and your XtraTufs. You can play road hockey on skates. You know 4 seasons - Winter, Still Winter, almost Winter and Construction. The municipality buys a Zamboni before a bus. You actually get these jokes and forward them to all your Northern friends.

Well, it's a done deal and the check is in the bank!
Makes me sad and happy at the same time.  The best 15 years of my life were spent in that house but now we can move on in the spring and get on with retirement.

Thanks, everybody.   I am sooo looking forward to not having to put up with Governor Brown and her cronies.
The thing I'll miss most about this place is the group of folks at the range and one little high mountain lake that seems to be the only place in the world where I can out-fish my wife.

I like the Kalispell area. Good folks and good hunting. Just big enough to have anything you need and small enough to be friendly. As a bonus if you need a gun barrel it is the home of McGowan barrels. Hope the move goes smoothly. Bob
