New Burris Scope

Today I received a Burris 2x7x35 slug gun scope with a 75 yard parallax I had ordered.  Seems like a good piece of equipment.   I was surprised it did not come with lens covers, just the cheap plastic ones on elastic or a one piece cover or something.   Thinking back on it this is the first new Burris scope I have purchased, oh well.   I like to cover the scope when transporting and storing the gun to limit dust etc.  I'm sure I have some around.

I'm going to mount this in on the 1100 Remington I bought last fall.   It came with a Hastings rifled barrel with cantilever mount.   A few days ago I got a 3" chambered shot barrel for it that had been cut to 25 1/2" and a thin wall choke tube system installed.   I'm getting the gun set up to hunt with this fall though how much use it will get is questionable as I have more shotguns than I can hunt with.

Butler Creek Bikini scope covers are my choice. They keep rain and dust off, are easy to put on/off, wad up in your pocket while hunting. They come in two sizes, so will fit most scopes.

I'm partial to Quake scope caps. Their sleeve is rubber which is thinner than other harder plastic brands. Thinner gives more space for the bolt to clear. I got a Nokon Monarch that came with caps but the rear one was too thick for the bolt to clear. The problem I'm having is Quake caps are hard to find.

I have a 50mm scope mounted on a Tikka rifle in the medium Opti-lock rings.  It sets so close to the barrel I had to cut a V notch on the cap so it would go one.  I like that set up, there's daylight between the scope and the barrel but not much.

You're gonna love it.  I have an Rem 870,fully rifled,with a Leopold scope on it.

I like and use the "bikini" covers BUT the newer ones don't seem to last as well as previous production. Lately, I've been using more of the neoprene full covers.  Protects the scope better, lasts longer, and easier to install/remove with gloves on.

Agree 100%, also helps with safe dings.

When I was a young hunter in Alaska the moose season always coincided with the fall rains,  (I never did figure out if Mother Nature sent the rain during moose season or if F&G scheduled the season to coincide with the fall monsoon).

Anyway, we lived in waders and rain gear.  If the scope didn't fog it was covered with rain drops.  Scope covers were new to the scene and most did not fit or work very well. 

A strip of inner tube was the most common scope cover.  Used like the bikini covers of today, you just had to pull back and shoot the thing clean off the scope and go to pounding a moose.  Those went away when they changed the composition of the rubber in inner tubes - not very stretchy and they break from dry rot . 

My favorite scope cover idea  was given to me by an old timer.  An un-lubed condom!  Just slip it over the muzzle of the rifle, just like...well, you know...then streeeetch it all the way back over the objective lens.  The front lens was covered in the process and with the "scope cover" stretched so tight you could actually sight through it and when the gun went "bang!" the condom went....somewhere.

I'm not joking.  I'm not sure I ever convinced my wife what that case of condoms was really used for .

Note: You can carry water in a condom in a survival situation.
