Winston Groom has passed.
He is most famous for 'Forrest Gump' of course, but his best works were, IMO, his historicals.
'A Storm in Flanders' - Self explanatory, but a very powerful work, IMO
'Shrouds of Glory' - towards the end of the Civil War
'Shiloh' - Self Explanatory
'Vicksburg, 1863' - Self Explanatory
'The Aviators' - Doolittle, Rickenbacker, and Lindbergh - well written and eye opening.
Ranked in order of my preference, but all wonderful works.
His writings about the Civil War bring a prospective not found from many authors, as he had family that served with those fighting for independence. Couple this with his extraordinary storytelling ability and deep grasp of history, he has left us with books that can be enjoyed, and 10 years later, enjoyed once again.

Freedom and a submissive populace cannot co-exist.
