Transfer of Rifle from NY to another state

I listed my rifle (308 BLR) with GB and it will sell this weekend. Yea! I know if it sells to another NYS resident the transfer needs to go through a FFL. How do I find out how to legally transfer the item to an out of state buyer. Does NY have any regulations regarding a out of state transfer?

    There are no NY State issues regarding shipping firearms out of the state, so when everything works right, you won't have to do much.

    Since lever actions are not an assault weapons in any locality I am aware of, the rifle can be shipped to any state. The buyer will find a dealer to accept the rifle and transfer it to him. The buyer, or his dealer, will also provide you with a copy of the Federal Firearms License, or the FFL number to run through the ATF EZ-Check website. Once you have the FFL...and the money, all that you have to do is head to the UPS depot/hub, or a Post Office, and send the rifle on its way to the new owner.

    One little detail ..... hopefully, your GB description included the statement, "Be sure that your FFL is willing to accept delivery from a nonlicensee."  Not all FFL's are willing to do so.  If his dealer insists that the gun must come to him from another dealer, you will need to negotiate your way out of this predicament.  The buyer will either have to find another dealer, or someone will have to pay your dealer a fee to ship it to his dealer.  Good luck.

    I found that enclosing a copy of your DL with the bill of sale signed by you helps smooth the transaction with a receiving dealer.  You can mail a long gun with tracking to assure (sort of) it gets there.  I use cheap hard cases with OSB under the padding to stiffen the case against the potential damage.  You pays your money and takes your chances.

    My grandson just asked me for a rifle & I am thinking of giving him my Ruger 10/22. The costs of a Kalifornia to Ohio transfer & shipping concern me. What if I just sent him the regular & heavy barrels & stocks? Could he buy just a receiver for maybe less than the transfer costs & hassle? 
    Just looked at the Ruger manual & it says part B1 is not sold. So what is involved in such a transfer?

    There are bare Ruger 10/22 receivers out there: VOLQUARTSEN makes them, but they are more expensive than complete rifles. Shipping from CA to Ohio will run $35 plus the dealer transfer fee of (say) $25. Sales tax? I'm not sure what Ohio has to say on sales taxes/use taxes, but grandfather to grandson my be exempted. Your call, grandpa.
