got my monthly subscription to a magazine and was sitting down reading and noticed i had trouble focusing so i laid the magazine over my eyes to shield from the light and really got a whiff....VOCs from the print.....set the magazine out on the deck in the sun and went in and downed a big glass of milk.....when i did bridge survey construction staking the welder would stop and get a jug of milk on the way to the site so when he got to welding on the galvanized decking, backwall, and wingwall panels he would always chug a lot of it ..times i would stay and help him weld these in place while the rest of the crew finished up and moved to another site..he would always make me chug a liberal dose too....supposed to help offset the zinc fumes ??....first time i ever got a hit from print solvents.......??????  about an hour and it cleared up.....must be getting old  or they really soaked this issue ?????

    Both.
Back when we got  local newspaper in print I'd have to let it sit and air out before reading it.  It was bad.

    What is VOCs?
    Never heard of this before.
    Volatile Organic Compounds

Basically, it's the stuff that stinks.  The vapors given off by things like acetone, gasoline, formaldehyde, paints, etc.

VOCs are probably not all that good for us, but I don't think printers have to wear hazmat suits - or drop dead at work very often. The milk thing is a placebo at best. Kinda like the Middle Ages when they firmly believed that eating pickled horseradish warded off Bubonic Plague.
    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

In chemistry, organic means "contains hydrogen & carbon atoms".  Most life forms are organic.  VOC's can poison you if the breathe them; covering the smell with that of milk will not prevent you from being harmed by the VOC's.  Paint stores now sell "low VOC" paint, at a higher price than "regular" latex paint; for interior use, it's worth the difference.
Newsprint used to be ink.  Now it is a mixture of kerosene & powdered carbon.  You want to read your newspapers outdoors or in a well ventilated area.  And, wash your hands after reading it.
