I get the sense that when business blogs talk about a toxic work environment, they are really referring to people like me.

    I don't know about your case, but in my experience, a "toxic work environment" was always created by management, often with the support and direction of the HR folks.  It was their way of trying to get rid of an employee buy pressuring him/her to quit so they wouldn't have to fire them and therefore pay out unemployment.  For example, the last HR director that "confronted" me began our little meeting by calling me a "poor excuse for a white boy" and a dozen or more other racist epithets, many of which I'd never heard.  I managed to get through that little scene, but a couple of days later, after my car had been vandalized for umpteenth time and I'd started to receive death threats, my female manager physically attacked me, trying to goad me into hitting her.  After I regained consciousness, I called the sheriff's office but when the guy got there, he looked at me covered in blood and looked at her and then threatened to arrest me!  I quit the next day.  Hope you have better luck!

    HR is never the friend of the worker!  If you keep that in mind they are easier to deal with.  The less you say the better.

    And, don't forget our friends in "Classification".  Their job is to write job descriptions so that the boss's friends & relatives can be hired for jobs for which they are not qualified.

    Most of the issues where I worked were caused by the unrealistic expectations caused by the  union leadership.

    The number 1 issue I face (or any hiring manager these days) is Equal Opportunity complaints. Many people who apply for a job think the only possible reason they did not receive an offer is due solely to bias. (It can’t possibly be they weren’t the strongest candidate).

    I don’t work in a toxic environment, if you do, I would advise you to get out of there.

    If you have worked in multiple toxic environments over the years and management is always wrong or always out to get you, it might be time to look in the mirror.
