You can fire someone for leaving dirty dishes in the sink?

Gotta go! Having a meeting with my wife.

Seriously, that sounds like an excuse to me. Easier than laying you off.

I don't know where you live but around here there seems to be work for folks that go look for it. I've been retired 12 years and people keep offering me work.

    Best wishes.

Sorry to hear it's never easy to worry about your income but as you noted the economy seems to be recovering and while many are service type jobs I'm sure your very good at something you can put to use to earn a living.
Why don't we go to school and work on the weekends and take the week off!

Sorry to hear that. Keep your chin up.

Sounds like a very lame excuse from your employer.  Were the dishes piled high to the ceiling?

I sure do wish you luck on finding a new and better job!

Based on your long running "Whats cooking tonite ????" thread (your spelling, not my own), you must have prepared dozens of meals at your job. Was this the first time you left dirty dishes in the sink? or has this been an ongoing issue?

Around here a lot of businesses and companies are having problems getting help. Seems a lot of people are taking advantage of the system and saying Covid worries them to much to return to work. Judy called me from where she volunteers and said her car sensors said one tire was down to 15 lbs. Since she was only a quarter mile from a local tire service store I told her to go there. She was told by the manager he could have it fixed in a week! Said he only had 3 guys working and it should have been 8. The other 5 refused to come back to work because of covid and were collecting unemployment. Told Judy to check with a multi service car repair a block away and they had it fixed in an hour. If that's the way it is where you are you can probably pick and chose from a lot of different jobs. Good luck. Bob

Yep, time to take advantage of the door closing and the window opening.  No shortage of jobs/career opportunities around my little burg, and the population of my little corner of the world is 1950 people.  I live 10 miles from the sprawling metropolis, and retired so not going to be competing for any openings, lol.

In Illinois the termination has to be a direct violation of work rules, insubordination or such to be denied unemployment.

I think "willful & negligent" is the term used by the Illinois Supreme Court.

While the state is an at will state and employers can fire anyone at anytime, bone head reasons are not grounds to deny unemployment

Keep you head up. I know what it's like being fired for stupid BS reasons. Don't let you opponents define you. YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE.

I was fired last July. There's a good story to it but I won't share it yet. There might be litigation. The union is deciding if they will pursue it further.

One thing I learned, those doing interviews are more understanding when the guy doing the interview is closer to the front line. They get it that corporate guys are quick to fire good people.

Fired for cause??? I don't think it works that way. If you're "laid off" that's different.

What kind of a job did you have? Dishwasher? If so I wouldn't be concerned one bit about losing that job.

In Florida, an employer can fire you without any justification at all if he wants to and I'm good with that, an employer should have the right to get rid of any employee that he wants, at any time.
It sucks to be on the receiving end of that deal however. I wish you the best.

As a one time employer and now an employee I can see both sides.  If your performance was not what the Company needed, they could have helped you do better but office politics may have screwed them out of a good man.  It sounds like somebody in management did not like you or your performance.  Once that issue crops up your time there is short.  It sucks but it is the way it works.  I suspect you were not entirely happy there either.  If it came out of the blue then they were wrong but life ain't fair.
With that said I have seen good workers; a good worker shows up, makes money for the Company and complies with the rules, fired by axxhat Management with inflated egos.  That burns my behind to no end.
Please decide what happened, be honest with yourself, why the firing happened and move on.
It is the only way to get ahead, take three steps forward, two back and keep on trucking.  Snowflakes will never understand that, but you do.
God has a plan for you, it is up to you to find it.  Obviously, your previous employment was not part of the plan.
Hold your chin high, step forward and never look back.
GOOD LUCK FOR A REWARDING FUTURE!

I spent 25 years as a health care tech in a mental hospital doing essentially the same job . Twenty of them as the floor supervisor on a ward for psychiatrically disturbed teenagers , both long and short term . Don’t think I would go back to that again !
