Taurid Meteor Shower Peaking

Rocky RaabRocky Raab Member Posts: 14,509 ✭✭✭✭
In another attempt by me to get our minds off of politics...
The annual Taurid meteor shower is about at its peak. If skies are clear, you should be able to see 10-12 bright yellow-orange meteors per hour for the next week or so, lasting pretty much all night. Full article and facts HERE

I love to watch them glowing in the upper atmosphere as they burn up high in the sky.  It is a wonder of nature thinking how far those rocks have come from outer space to intersect with our blue globe.  I just wish I could stay up much past dark to enjoy the show.

Thanks Rocky!  Being an early riser, I will get outside and enjoy the show while we are having a bit of nice Indian Summer weather.

Had a nite flight from Boston to Richmond the night the Perseid shower peaked.  Flite left Boston at 11:45 PM. plane was 75% empty, had row to self.  Moved over to window on left side of aircraft- and from 30,000 feet had the best view of a meteor shower I have ever seen.  Flite attendant asked what I was watching- told her.  She looked out the window, just said WOW!

It was clear last night, but I only saw one flash in the sky. This morning, it is cloudy and will remain so for at least a week as a  big winter storm sets in. Figures.

We had a somewhat clear sky last night.   A little hazy from river fog.  I couldn't see any meteors.
    Will try again tonight.

It is apparently much better viewing in the morning, when Orion is high because the meteors appear to come out of the sky in that region. That's why I went out at 5 am today - to no avail. Tomorrow this time it will be raining turning to snow.
