I want to clean the chimney cap when I remove it next weekend. There ares some creosote deposits on the screen. What's the best way to remove them? I'm thinking mineral spirits and a wire brush. Any suggestions?
Thanks guys,
It's too late for me, save yourself.

Might want to clean the chimney
Use a handheld propane torch and bottle. IMO, the best way to clean a spark arrestor screen in gas powered equipment. just burn it until all of the buildup is gone, and don't burn the screens. Simple, easy way to do it...
You might want to take a peek down the chimney and see how much creosote is there. Your cap issue would depend on what kind of screen. If it's stainless steel and heavy grade you could try p-thinner or laquer thinner. Would the screen hold up to just burning it off? I think I'd start with a wire brush.

Wear gloves and protective equipment. Creosote is bad stuff, carcinogenic. We had a state office building, in the city I use to live in. The external surface, had decorative/cosmetic pier pilings that had been cresoted.
After the powers that be, were appraised of the carcinogenic dangers of creosote. It was closed. I don't know if they tore it down? I had left prior to their decision. It was a fairly new multi story office building. Probably less than 10 years old. I always wondered what happened to the Einstein, who made the decision about the cresoted pier pilings?
Oven cleaner,....let it sit for a minute and the creosote will wipe right off with a paper towel.

Why not just buy a new one?
Bug-Tar remover spray ... any auto store.
If creosote were as dangerous as "they" say it is, all of us old and current pole jockeys (linemen) would be long dead. I've had the skin on the inside of my forearms peel off more than a few times.
Thanks again for all the replies guys. My chimney is fine now. It's just the SS cap screen that I need to clean. What about fuel oil and a wire brush? I normally wouldn't ask these questions but I no longer can climb ladders and need to ask someone to come over to remove and then replace the cap. I want him to do this in one trip.
