"can this firearm use modern shot shells?"..................probably, we need a LOT more info. Savage made several "springfield" double barrel shotguns, m-5100, 311, to name a couple.
i don't have the gun in my hands. it states on the gun "proof tested 12 Ga. according to the owner
only use 2 3/4 in these
Under the barrels or under the forearm is one of the usual placed to put information about these shotguns. The most used place though in either on the water table or on the breech block which sits on the water table.
These areas sometimes show wear so magnification can be a great help.
Best.
Any of those old Springfield shotguns are safe to fire modern ammo, assuming reasonably good condition, and it locks up tight. That is my personal opinion. There is a lot of info on the internet about them. There are lower pressure "light loads" available.
I don't know which model your friend has - but here is a model 511 that just sold recently that might give you and idea of the current value of that model: https://www.gunbroker.com/item/884243733
