USPS money orders......

toad67toad67 Member Posts: 13,008 ✭✭✭✭

Has anyone else had trouble getting a m/o from the USPS lately? My local store has quit printing them because they are having printer troubles, after 4 of them. Went to the next town over, and the same thing, it took 12 times to get one. Gal said that all of a sudden all of the printers are taking a dump. Anyone else having the same troubles?

I purchased one this morning at the Lake City, Florida post office. No problem printing it - just hurt my bank balance to purchase it.

Personal checks beat money orders every time. If a money order is lost in the mail, it takes 60-90 days and multiple claim filings, and nearly an Act of Congress to get it replaced. So, if you really want the item, you buy another to replace the first one while the USPS is trying to find it.

Send a check and it gets lost, no sweat. Cut another one. If the original shows up, the recipient can either return it or shred it. If it ends up in the wrong hands and gets forged, all you have to do is complete a forgery affidavit at the bank, and it becomes the bank's problem

I had a buyer send a check. It didn't arrive. We waited a couple weeks. He sent another. It arrived. I negotiated it and shipped the purchase. The next day, the original check arrived in an envelope that was nearly shredded. I contacted the buyer and sent him his check back.

I sent a USPS money order and sent it certified. Oddly enough the tracking number for the certified letter shows a confirmation of having been delivered on the 5th, yet the seller states no payment received, saying "tracking isn't always reliable." Well, yes, it can be off, but when something is scanned as being delivered that's quite different.

I send cashiers checks. They don't cost anything for me, so better than MO unless that is all a seller will except, or it is a $10 item.

I have supported the USPS for decades by purchasing stamps and Money Orders as well as handling much of my shipping. My local PO is staffed with excellent folks. The M.O.s have always worked for me except one time when a Money Order got lost. I used their system and the Money Order was replaced without problems.

Recently though, it seems that their system has been experiencing some problems so I switched over to using Bank Checks or Cashier Checks. I check with the seller first then get one cut. I mail it Certified which has gotten it to the location without fail. The skin-flints will rail at the increased cost but everything is more expensive these days. Include it in your cost of doing business.

All of the shipping sources are absolutely swamped, more so this year. And with the Christmas shipping season and C-19 well onto us, they're even more overwhelmed. Everyone is buying online and shipping stuff, so plan ahead best you can. I was notified last week that tomorrow is the last day some suppliers will ship to guarantee making a Christmas delivery. The shipping volumes are so high now that that entire system is having problems. All long guns should be shipped in hard cases and sleeved in a cardboard box securely taped. Otherwise, expect damage and delayed arrival dates.

I cannot find a PO around here that will cash their own MO - they have no money on hand. (They will sell you one, however). When I get one I deposit it in my bank account.

I found that certified cashier checks ain't what they used to be, either. Nowadays, the bank holds them until they clear.

I can't believe they misspelled "Pork and Beans!"
