In my day, SERE was all about Vietnam, of course. There were several days of classroom stuff, the a week of "escaping" and surviving in the mountains of Washington state. Then we were all "captured" and first enjoyed days of solitary confinement and interrogation (including some reduced but very real "torture") and sleep deprivation. Finally we were placed in a prison camp where we were expected to try some kind of escape.
In your mind you know it's all simulated, but they make it damn real at times. It is no fun at all. You leave the school half starved, utterly exhausted, and absolutely sure you will do almost anything to avoid being captured.

I went through the Navy's SERE/DWEST in 1971 and as Rocky suggested, it certainly isn't a trip to Disneyland!!!!!!

He was the only one in the group to evade capture for the entire number of days he was hiding and scooting. The other guys were definately ruffed up by the "enemy" after they got caught. It is no picnic for these young men to become an instructor in SERE. They pay their dues and we can all sleep better knowing they are on the right team.
