My new addiction

savage170savage170 Member Posts: 37,572 ✭✭✭✭

Started when I put my AR 10 308 together from a PSA parts kit and a stripped lower I didn't realize how easy they were to build with a little help from youtube videos till then. Now instead of looking for deals on rifles I'm looking for deals on stripped lowers and upper receivers. I have discovered I really enjoy putting them together and the parts hunt

Years ago my mother asked me, "How many rifles do you need?" I replied, "How many are there?" The new answer for you is, "How many can I build?"😁

Same here. I built 5 AR's during the initial quarantine. I had to do some creative shopping to find all the parts. The lower receivers were accumulated some time prior to Covid.

I get a lot of satisfaction from the work and now I have a good working knowledge of how the rifle works. I know for certain the assembly was accomplished with quality parts and the rifles are accessorized just for me.

I have seen some posts on this forum from folks that belittle AR's that are not "factory-built" and I realize some guns are slapped together with inferior parts by folks that don't have the expertise to mount a scope. It's like reloaded ammo. My quality is good but I don't trust other people.

    I build for me.

My wife would ask"Dont you already have one of those?".I would say"Yes,but I dont have two of them".

    That's awesome!

I've assembled 4 or 5 AR15 lowers. I still have an AR10 stripped lower waiting for parts and assembly.

I'm yet to build an AR-10. Next on my list.

There isn't anything especially difficult about assembling an AR. What is difficult these days is finding anything resembling a "deal" on lowers and uppers. I assembled this AR-10 from parts purchased from PSA early last year:

It would be much more expensive to build the same rifle now.

I got bit about two maybe three years ago . ended up building about nine and one almost complete I had forgot about it I stopped early last year doing them , but for me a lot of the fun was scrolling thru auctions for all the parts ( did I mention I am cheap and broke ) I just ordered a lower to finish one then I will kick the addiction , I did rifle's and pistol's started with 5.56 then 300 black out then a 308 . I ran across the complete upper looking lonely in my safe I know I could switch with a number of other uppers and keep shooting . but not being complete just bugged me 😉 so I found the lower just before Christmas on sale . I could spend the rest of life just switching out parts and testing each one so I called it quits .

I was tempted to jump on a AK build but that would be a whole new set of tools

Does the AR-10 use the same barrel wrench/tool thingie as the 15's?

I might just have to try my hand at puttin' one together. Sounds fun!

You can get by with spending under $50 on basic tools, but the job is made a lot easier with a professional quality set made specifically for the AR.

The master set has every tool that you'll ever need, and a few that you'll never use. Shop around for the best price. retail is $250, dealer is $199, but paid $179 through a SHOT Show special.

If you don't want the full set you can buy individual tools, the master armorers wrench, bench block, and vise block being very useful:

I got by with the Tapco tool and a good punch set and the vise blocks are a real plus.Being a mechanic I pretty much had everything else I needed

My wife likes red so I put this one together for her I just found out that you can also get a red forward assist button so I guess I'll be adding that soon and there is a Fixed Hougue stock trimmed in red on order that A2 stock will end up on my next build.

There is no limit to the number of colors for AR parts. I use blue/gray to separate 300 Blackout from 5.56mm

I discovered it is usually cheaper to buy a complete upper rather than collect all the parts. However, I prefer to build my own to get exactly what I want.

I dearly love an adjustable gas block and a smooth round fore grip.

as others have posted I have repaired and worked on about every thing in my life so I had all the tools needed

I did buy a AR multi purpose wrench for the barrel and castle nuts and a mag well vise block to hold while torqueing the barrel nut , then I did buy a set of roll pin starter punches not needed but makes it easier .

I will add now with the avid KIT on the market if your going to build more than one I would say its a good investment and it could always be resold to recover most of the money if you decide to go that route

watch the auctions is my best advise I bought several timney and other drop in triggers off the auctions and a couple light pull even a couple polished enhanced ones PSA run sales and so do a lot of the other suppliers .

last tool I bought was a set of go/ no go gauges also on the auctions . majority all the parts are suppose to be military spec or better but so many variations of parts and suppliers I thought it best to be safe

go to you tube watch a few or as many as you like to get a good idea and a few tips to make it easier . tossing one together is easy and paper plate moa I would say is easy also however building one to get competition accuracy I would say takes a bit more than just screwing together parts unless luck comes into
