50 Years and 25 Calibers

AmbroseAmbrose Member Posts: 3,225 ✭✭✭✭

I was looking up the DOM of my Ruger 77's and discovered something. The difference between the oldest and the newest is 50 years and the difference between the smallest and the largest is 25 caliber.

My newest and also my largest is a .450 Bushmaster made in 2019. My oldest is a 6 mm Remington made in 1969. The one with the smallest bore is a .204 Ruger.

I guess I have an addiction to the blued steel and walnut Rugers.

And the older ones are bringing good coin. Those 204s are just kick * on coyotes, simply blazing -

Yep, good rifles. Got three of them myself, 30-06, 7mm Express, and 338 WM.

Mix of tang safety, mark IIs and Hawkeyes or do you specialize in one series? Obviously you have at least one tang safety and one Hawkeye if the spread is 50 years but just wondering.

My Model 77 also dates to early 1969. It was originally a 6mm, but was re-barreled in the early 90s with a Shilen barrel in 7mm-08. I kinda like the early flat bolt on the tang safety rifles. I read on some Ruger forum that Bill Ruger was a big fan of the flat bolt design, but really was the only person at Ruger that did like it, and eventually the folks at the factory got him to agree to the later Brownell shaped bolt handle.

Love them old Ruger's, bent bolt and tang safety.

Got 2, a 7mm Rem.Mag. and a .308. Both have very nice, dark, straight grain wood on them.

shootuadeal: Flat bolt, tang safety, MKII, Hawkeye; I've got a few of each, there's even a "round top" in the mix (takes Rem. 700 scope base).

You should watch Kasey's (Locust Fork) auctions for a few weeks. She has and will be having some very nice condition 77's on auction. The 7 rem mag she has listed now is a round top. 17 hmr, 22 lr, 22 wmr, 6 mm, 243, 243 varmint, 243 RSI, 270 RL (ultralight), 308 varmint, 220 swift, 30-06, 338, and 358. Several with original boxes.

neacpa: Thanks for the heads-up. The .358 sounds interesting, and the '06. Would you believe, probably the most common center-fire chambering in the world, and I don't have a 77 in .30/06! I have other rifles in '06 but no 77.
