I'm so old I remember 3 cent postal stamps, as in 3 cents to mail a first class letter!!

I remembered this as I paid $11 for a book of 20 postal stamps yesterday. Postal worker told me rates were going up, "Do you want to buy additional stamps to beat the price increase??"
So I spent $55 at the post office for stamps. At 3 cents per stamp I could have mailed 1,833 first class letters with 1 cent left over back when I was a kid!!

I remember penny post cards. $.25 cigarettes, .10 bread, and kittens and puppies free to a good home.

He Dog, puppies and kittens...... free!! Back then if you had unwanted puppies or kittens you didn't care if they went to a good home, as long as they went!!
Thank you for mentioning penny post cards. I was ALMOST positive I remembered penny post cards but I wasn't 100% sure!!
When I was a kid mom would have us put letters in the mail box and place the postage cost on top of the letter. The mail carrier would take care of the stamp. I remember putting pennies on the letter.
I remember when shipping a handgun was $3, and a whopping $5 for a rifle.
Ah, but do you remember the half cent stamps....1 1/2 and 2 1/2 cents ? I may still have one of those.
Mary Janes, Black Jacks, Bazooka Joe, Tootsie Rolls, and a host of others were a penny. A pack of candy cigarettes, or a bubble gum cigar would cost you 3 cents.
No wonder I have had addiction problems most of my life! 😅
I remember shipping & receiving private firearm sales by Trailways / Greyhound bus'es and getting them most times before the end of the day if within 300 miles, Nationwide 3 maybe 4 days. No U.S postal, UPS, Fed-Ex, FFL's to deal with 😀

In 1968, I could mail my dad a gallon (4 Qts) of duty free Chivas Regal Scotch from Puerto Rico for about $6. If they caught me doing that today, I would be in deep doo. I did that multiple times when I was able to go to the duty free shops in the Virgin Isles.

The Post office is a service, never intended to make a profit, but it damn sure bent over for junk mail!
$0.39 fried chicken lunch at Bud's bar in Indy.
$0.16/gal gas at the Standard station - Sheridan & WM Drive in Peoria, IL.
$1.00/can of Freon-12 at K-Mart in Indy.
Those were the days.
I still have the receipt for my 1911 pistol from the DCM. $14.85 + $2.15 for shipping. First class postage was ten cents when I started delivering mail. I remember when I was a kid that postage was three cents & twice a day delivery. For one cent you got a post card you addressed on one side & wrote on the back. You could also mail a letter for two cents if you didn't seal it & just tucked the flap in. Many people sent their Christmas cards that way. I also remember how hard Eisenhower tried to keep the Federal budget under one hundred billion Dollars.
The theory for bulk business mail was that it was to be used for load leveling. On high volume days it is curtailed & then delivered on low volume days. Problem with that is the big mailers have a Congressman in their hip pocket & he/she screams at the local Postmaster when their mail gets cut. If you want to see someone bend over think of a local Postmaster being screamed at by a Congressperson. I retired before delivery point sequencing came in so I don't know if bbm is still curtailed at all.

When I was really a youngun , I remember My Great-GrandMother had a major Melt-Down when stamps went up to 5 cents , She said she wasnt going to be able to write any more letters ( she wrote on a regular basis ) , They had One telephone in the house ( far kitchen wall) if the phone rang : it better be dang important _ not for chit-chat !!!

I remember mail being delivered twice a day, and the poor guy was carrying a leather mailbag..
But he only had half a day's mail. The leather bag was heavy but it did a great job of protecting the mail from the rain. I had one I would put in the vehicle if we expected heavy rain. Big problem with certified & registered mail in the front of the cloth sack when it got soaked, even the poncho was not enough to protect the mail.
