I may be wrong (I thought I was wrong once but I was mistaken) ... but it seems to me there has been a lot of "unexplained" fires in the cites around here. Almost nightly.
This started back in the summer when the Americommies were rioting and burning and demanding cities defund the police.
Are they trying to defund the police by overburdening the city budgets?
I hope I'm wrong.
I can't believe they misspelled "Pork and Beans!"

bustedknee,
This is a real stretch because of the generality of the question.
There are increases in the number of fires every year when the weather turns cold and the lesser constructed homes and buildings manage to fail while occupants try to keep warm, often with questionable heat sources. Christmas time frequently brings a surge in fires from faulty electrical decorations and overburdened electrical wiring. Battery failures in cheap toys catching fire contribute to this number also.
Check your figures and sources by comparing to past years.
Best.

I forgot to add "unoccupied",
Warehouses and empty buildings.
Roanoke, Danville, Lynchburg....
Well, that one word can make a significant difference in the context of your statement. I have no response to the change because I haven't read any articles detailing such an increase recently.
Best.
