What'd you use to do? I thought you always had a farm, and farmers don't retire. Congrats and enjoy each day.

Social Worker/family therapist and then worked in Court Services for over 30 years retiring as Deputy Director. The farm has been in my wife’s family for over 110 years. We bought the place a few years before retiring after the in-laws both passed away....I grew up in the country so this was the perfect retirement as far as I am concerned ....

I retired from my old job.....I guess I get to be a farmer until I’m gone..

How long have you been retired ? Or how long before you pull the plug ?

I retired 7 yrs ago in May. I still have dreams (nightmares) about that place. When I drive by there, I roll the window down and holler “Send my check!”

I just turned 62 in December. I think about retiring more each day.

    I'm 43, so I've still got a minutes work.

10 years for me. Currently I seem to be working on setting a world record for honey-do jobs completed. Judy just says she is doing her part to keep me active and healthy. Somehow I took that as meaning my health would suffer if I don't keep working on her list. Ain't love grand? 😯 Bob

I retired May 2012, spent my last 33 years working at a tire manufacturing plant as an electrician. I don't miss the place, I miss SOME of the people. We made some good moves with our funds, annuities and retirement are doing OK. Got everything paid for, so just the normal expenditures to deal with. I stay busy in the yard (2 acres) and honey do's. I'm active in my Masonic Lodge, accepting the appointment to District Deputy Grand Master for this year, and chairing the Board of Charities for the last 4 years.

I have a 150 yard shooting range next door that I helped my neighbor put together, and enough ammo to make use of it.

Both Grandkids are grown and have good jobs, our Daughter and her husband are gainfully employed with good retirement plans, so no immediate need to assist any of them.

Did I say I was enjoying not getting up at 5 AM to drive to work every day? 😀

I’m going within a year and a quarter. Could be less unless this new one starts to get fun. One of the guys at the meat shoot today wanted to start a pool and bet on July.

After 40 years of construction work and IF the plan holds together then April 9th, 2021 will be my last day of work. After that a years worth of remodeling on the new house and then some fishin'/huntin'/nappin! If I get bored I suppose I can always find something to do.

I retired in January 2006 at 60 years old; so 15 years and counting for me.

Saw my last day working for Uncle Sam in February 2019. Thirty years, various locations and titles due to multiple Army moves made it interesting.

Retirement turned into a "honey do" list created by my kids. I have one last big project remaining which is the remodel of the house in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Hoping to sell it this summer.

Retired from the S.O. January 2012...(37 years)...The last 10 years I was the county substation Communications Director and 911 center manager with an E.N.P. certification through N.E.N.A...at that time I was the 1000th certification in the world... Upon retiring from the S.O. ...A compressor company asked if I would maintain a fleet of portable compressors in a local oil/gas area close by...Worked with them for 5 years and called it quits...Pay was not that much but the benefits were awesome...It was a young persons job...not so much for an old fart...(great company !!!)...In between I had an ammunitions manufacturing business with a 06 FFL...Certified locksmith (pain in the *!!)...Anything to make ends meet...

Now if I could get the wife to retire!!!

Just retired after 42 years , last two trying to beat a brain tumor. what i would like to know is what do you do with all this time

  • ridgleyartridgleyart Member Posts: 937 ✭✭✭✭

I got out of the rat race about 10 years ago at the age of 37. I was a systems administrator for Bellsouth for a number of years and after that spent 10+ years as an Autocad draftsman. Now I attend a lot of auctions and sell online, it's perfect for me because I like buying stuff and selling stuff for a nifty profit. I never run out of stuff to do, like shooting, hiking our woods, and playing with our rather large pack of dogs.

I pray for healing and remission from your tumor...

Filling time is easy for me......find those things that interest you and go after them...explore new ideas and new things. Get and keep yourself in the best physical shape you can and have a plan for every day....Spend time with friends and helping others when you have the chance.....

    Welcome to the Forum...

Retired from the PD 16 years ago and then worked part time for the town as a consultant for 2 years. Since then it's been building 2 houses, moving ourselves & relatives, then selling 2 houses. Don't think I can really retire until the older relatives I take care of pass on. I don't plan on ever finishing our house as I'll always have something to do.

    Semi-retired in 1985, when I started a business working about 8 hours a week.

Retired from that (sold the business) about 3 years ago for a couple of months, while I went to school.

Working 28 hours a week from home now.

Guess I will never fully retire.

joepudd, if you do not have a hobby, get one.

Stay busy, even if it is the honey-do list.

I retired from the only "full time job" I ever had in 2009 with almost 30 years of service BUT, I'll always be a farmer first and foremost. Been in production agriculture for 55 years and not seeing an exit for a while yet. Presently 11 years into a part time "retirement enhancement job" but not sure how much longer that's going to last. COVID has cut that income by 75% so much less attractive now.

Left moms' house at 15 and got my own apt, worked fast food and gas station while going to High School, joined the ARMY my senior year at 17 and served 4 years, got out and spent the 80's mostly in telecommunication/cable TV industries while using G.I. Bill to start college. 1990 got hired by big corporation in computer tech and took an early retirement in 2009, spent 6 months as K-12 substitute teacher, then taught for 6 months at several Technical colleges, returned to old job as contractor in 2010 been doing that since.... some months no classes some months 3-4 classes, classes are 2-3 days each and all done online from home. I'll be 62 in about 18 days and will probably start to draw my S.S.I. and may still do a class here and there. Got 20 acres so there is always something to do that needs doing....

I retired at midnight Dec. 31st 2005, so I've been loafing for just over 15 years now. I'm amazed how fast time flies when you're doing something you love. When I was working I would go to bed about midnight and get up about 7am. Now I go to bed about 10 and get up between 5-6. 😁

Been loafing for 12 years now. I retire in only 14 more.🤣

No wait, I worked in Zoos for 40 years and retired 12 years ago.

    That makes me 62 right?
