Metal detector question

yblockheadyblockhead Member Posts: 947 ✭✭✭

I'm thinking about getting a metal detector and know zilch about them. Any recommendations of brands, types, or anything else that I might want to know?

Thanks in advance!

I have a whites but its a older one I bought it new maybe 15 to 20 years ago at the time it was the best one they had

a ex BIL bought a top of the line garret both were about the same in there function I seem to remember about 400.00 give or take for each one back then )

we spent many a afternoon and weekend searching a old park close by and school yards old houses old fair grounds and so on

I did find just about enough change to pay for mine but countless hours of looking lot of exercise if you count that lol maybe a handful of silver coins and old 1900 era nickel's and penny's nothing to write home about

fun hobby and the excitement to see a bit of silver coin or ring glaring or a gold ring ( mine were all just plated I found )

I did recover a couple class rings for buddies whos kids lost there's but knew the general area to look

set my low so countless pull tabs and bottle caps LOL

he found a bit more but was out 2x as much as I over about a two year period

one thing we did find way more people have a metal detector that I ever imaged . you know you have the dream of finding all the great lost items only to discover 50 + more in th esame town ( small town ) have hunted the day lights out of the same area

I would suggest maybe finding one on the secondary market before jumping in on a new one ( at least a high end one )

I still have mine and a couple a bit newer I get out on rare occasions

also I am positive over the last 20 years they have come a long way and sure the prices have also

there use to be magazines decayed solely to metal detecting they may be around still

    good luck

I have a cheap "Bounty Hunter" that was about $150. It came with headphones, case and small locator. It finds metal, but there are much better units available. A coworker and I went to a old civil war site and he was using a Garret Pro series. He found miniballs, buttons and all kinds of cool stuff. I found nothing but trash. I took mine to the beach a few years ago and found quarters dimes and nickels some that were over a foot deep. There's a website called Kellyco detectors that sells just about everything related to metal detecting and has prices that are hard to beat. Best of luck.

I have a Fisher and like it. Best find so far was survey markers that got buried. LOL Fun if you can bend and dig.

I've used Fishers with good results but my target was pretty good size we was looking for buried Man Hole lids in easements

You find lots of things, old tools, horse shoes, old padlocks that are worthless to the rest of the world but are great to you because you found them.

I used mine to find some of the brass that took off while shooting at my range. I always got more false positives than actual brass. I finally built a brass catcher on a tripod that I shoot beside. Works every time.

White or Garrett. Good ones are in the $600. to $1200. range and up to $2500 or so for the very high end models.
