Tired of carrying a heavy hunting rifle every season?

nononsensenononsense Member Posts: 10,928 ✭✭✭✭

Well, here is the lightest rifle I've ever seen:

The Howa Carbon Stalker mini action will be available in .223 Win.(should be .223 Remington😒), 7.62 x 39 and 6.5 Grendel with a 22-inch standard Howa barrel that is fitted into a custom carbon-fiber-wrapped stock that brings the weight of this highly functional lightweight hunting rifle in at 4.11 pounds. The Carbon Stalker mini action is the perfect companion for numerous hunting applications from deer to varmint hunting, providing exceptional accuracy at a value-packed price. Features include a two-stage match trigger, three-position safety, detachable magazine, sub-MOA assurance and lifetime warranty. The Carbon Stalker will be available at select Howa distributors and dealers across the USA for 2021 with additional short-action and long-action models coming soon. MSRP: $999.

The Kimber Mountain Acsent weighs in 2oz heavier and more than twice the price.

The Kimber is chambered in the 308 Win class of cartridges. Don't know if that adds 2oz or not.

The Howa's are great guns for the money....

Could they mean .223 WSSM? Doesn't seem likely but you never know.

Based on the rim size of the cartridges listed, I doubt it. I suspect it's just a stupid proof reader...

    Best.

For comparison: My Tikka T3 lite stainless in 300wsm, with 50mm 2.4x10 scope, opti-lock rings, nylon sling, and loaded with ammo weighs 8 pounds 5 ounces. I could use a smaller scope and lighter rings to reduce weight but I like the set up I have. Recoil wise you know you've toughed it off but it isn't bad, to me. Some people think the recoil is heavy.

I feel quite fine with my Remington Mohawk 600.......................in .308 Win. It is short, light, and accurate with Leoupold optics.

A buddy of mine has a Kimber Mountain Ascent rifle in 270 Win.

At 5 lb 10 oz (plus scope) that thing'll knock your shoulder out of joint!

I'm sorry, but I am fed up that the only thing you can get new these days on the "traditional" platform is the bolt action.

I like it but not @ $1K and it doesn't have a threaded muzzle. Guess I'll keep looking for a Ruger American in 6.5G. I found one locally in .223 for $450 but haven't seen a 6.5G for months.

looking up on a recoil chart the 4.1 pound naked rifle in a 7.62x39 would kick like a 30/30.. still manageable at 14# of recoil .Add the scope and it would be less. My Ruger American has a recoil of about 9 or so with the scope.

I would enjoy hearing what other form you would like to see.

I run with mainly bolt action shooters and some that favor competing with gas guns so I could use some direction as to what you would prefer. I get the blinders syndrome where I only see what's in front of me...

With regard to weight, the last couple of years brought about a tremendous amount of discussion concerning finding and carrying lighter weight rifles. I was fielding these questions nearly everyday through phone calls and emails. Many shooters were tired of carrying 9 or 10 lb. rifles while hunting. So the push was on to find a way to create a lighter rifle but still maintain the stability and rigidity of a heavier rifle. See the above since it represents the lightest one I've seen commercially.

If the demand for lightweight rifles continues, lightweight rifles will stay available. If the demand drops then they will fade away like any other idea.

It's common knowledge that recoil is affected by the weight of the rifle along with the weight of the bullet, the velocity the load generates and the weight of the ejecta. It's a choice or trade off that shooters and hunters make while deciding how much weight they want to carry. I still carry 12 - 14lb. rifles because that's what works for me. The downside is that I have to start working out sooner before the hunting season.😉😊

    Best.

If I didn't already have a couple 6.5 Grendels I would be interested in that combination that round has impressed me so far and it is a good match for a light weight gun

SWEET! However my walk in the woods for deer and turkey hunting is about 130 feet. Although the Encore 45-70 or the Browning Citori are not that light I tend to manage alright as long as I take a break on the way.

I'm with bpost, I either sit on the front porch or on the back deck, backyard through a hole in the privacy fence for turkeys.
