I saw this thread when it first posted and it almost made me angry. For years I have tried to get my wife interested in the shooting sports, of any kind, at even some basic level. She would have nothing of it. I gave her space and occasionally would express my concern over her safety, or that it might even be a fun activity we could do together. Nothing, except the occasional argument about the number of guns I own and still wanted, and how much time I spend hunting or even talking about guns. We've been married 25 years and she has been around guns and hunting all her life so, it has been really frustrating as well as confusing to me.
On Saturday we were at her parent's house having coffee like we frequently do. A brief discussion surfaced about her mom and dad wanting something other than the ancient 32 cal 4 shot revolver they have. Her dad was an avid hunter for years and owns many guns, including hand guns, but his health has deteriorated significantly in the last 10 years and when they moved into their current home, he left all his guns at his oldest son's house, where they remain. This little pistol and a single shot 12 gauge were all they had available to them and her mother didn't feel very comfortable with either of them.
The conversation shifted to the recent gift my niece had received from my wife's brother for Christmas: a new pistol... her first. (side bar: he liked the gun she picked out so much he bought himself one). My wife's brother was on his way over to show off the two guns, to see if his mom was interested. My niece was the one who did all the research on the pistol and had found the one she loved, and he hoped his mother would find that she liked it.
A lil more background. In recent years, my wife and her brother have really clashed heads over various issues. He is a very outspoken conservative and always wants to talk/argue politics lately. My wife tires of him picking arguments with people even if she agrees with him. There have been a few notable fights between them. Anyway, I knew because of this that she was a) not going to be excited he was coming to join/interrupt our coffee time and b) that the subject would be about guns. Inside, I was getting upset and holding my tongue, trying not to stir the pot. I said almost nothing about the subject even trying to shift conversation away from guns (which of course I love... I think you guys know this). Most people in the family (both sides) consider me to be the most knowledgeable in the family and I probably am (of course the reality is I know just the tip of the iceberg, especially in view of folks on this forum). Anyway, I was sure there was going to be an argument, so I just kept my mouth shut.
He showed up and immediately unpacked both guns. I feigned disinterest for the most part. I looked at them, of course, but just let my mother-in-law size them up. My brother-in-law was going on and on, talking politics too (about gun bans coming because of Biden, and magazine capacity limits that were looming and so on) and stumbling through his demo. I stepped in to help clear up a few points. A bit to my surprise, my mother-in-law fell in love with them. She loved how naturally they pointed, how the trigger felt, and after just a few attempts was working the slide very naturally. And then my wife joined in. She handled the guns for a bit and mostly just watched. My mother-in-law decided she wanted to buy one, so my brother-in-law said he'd take them to the shooting range where he had purchased one of the two guns (apparently they'd had a shipment of them come in). My wife and I left for home to get started on projects we had waiting. Once we got there my wife said "I suppose we should go get one." My jaw hit the floor. She wanted one for herself. She WANTED one for herself. She cited the likelihood of coming gun bans as motivation and mentioned the hand gun safe she had gotten me for Christmas. I practically tried to talk her out of it. I didn't think she was serious and kept moving toward getting ready to do projects. She was serious!
We spent about 20 minutes discussing it and she decided she wanted to go down to the shooting range to see if we could still get one (her brother had mentioned the range was hardly able to keep this pistol in, when they got them). I was trying to reign in my excitement, but apparently it was apparent. I drove us there. The place had opened about 20 min prior and was swamped with customers and activity. She walked up to the counter, where her mom was just finishing her purchase. People were lined up almost to the door. All the shooting lanes were full and we could hardly even talk to anyone working there. When we got up to her mother and brother, her brother announced to the salesman that my wife was there to get herself a pistol and my wife told the nice young man she wanted the same gun as her mother, without even knowing exactly which model of gun she had purchased. I was almost laughing. On the way we'd discussed that we should try to look at some other models, like maybe even the one my son-in-law just bought himself. She wasn't super interested in that, but conceeded it might be worthwhile. Regardless, we'd jumped the line and had hardly gotten a chance to even talk to the sales guy before he ran off to get the same make and model for us. I didn't even have a chance to slow him down and say "hey, can we look at some other guns?" It didn't matter, this was the one my wife was interested in. I was merely trying to maybe find something else that would work and be less expensive. I just let it all happen. My wife filled out the 4473, my wife paid for it... this is HER gun.
I'm a happy guy right now, and am hopeful things will continue to go well. My wife wants to hit the range with it once her background check clears (10-15 days!!??). I'm excited. Oh, and the gun? It's a SIG P365XL RomeoZero. She says I might get to shoot it.

Randy, that is a great story. Glad to hear she has changed her mind!
My wife became interested in hunting after she smashed up her then favorite car, hitting deer. She was really mad, and wanted to slaughter them all. Add training phase here.
Her first year was a fruitless learning experience, but she has harvested at least one deer every year since, along with a few turkeys along the way. She field dresses her harvest too!
We fish nearly every weekend during the warm months, and she's no slouch there either. Aside from an occasional buried hook, she does everything else to put fish in the cooler.
My wife enjoys shooting, we stopped by the gun store the other day and she was checking out some guns and almost bought two! She ended up buying a plinker, a .22 Walther P-22. I stayed out of it, we have quite a few hand guns and some are specifically for her, but this is the first one she actually bought with "her" money.
Why don't we go to school and work on the weekends and take the week off!

My spouse hardly even talks to me anymore much less shoots with me. Last time I took my wife shooting was 20 years ago. She wanted to learn how to shoot and it was a disaster. I told her to get professional help, I don't have the patience to teach her and I have taught Africans to shoot.

No..................
My wife isn't interested in anything including her husband. 😣
Mine does not. Although she can shoot and has done target practice with me a few times.
She thinks I lost all my guns in a boating accident.

Wife likes ammo better than the firearms. 😀
My wife has shot some .22's but does not like shooting.
But, last winter, while I was watching a hunting show, she mentioned that she would like to try to shoot a bow.
Been married almost 30 years and all of a sudden she wants to shoot a bow.
She mentioned it off and on for a couple of months so I surprised her on her birthday in March with a new compound bow.
With the covid junk this year and her working from home, she got pretty good with it and was shooting it without me too.
She would never hunt with it but, she enjoys shooting it.
Probably not many ballistics on a arrow shot from a bow. Don

No spouse here.........but my ex used to go shooting with me.........don't give a flip what her interest is now.
I think that may be why I can't get a date. I can out shoot, out hunt, out cuss and out drink just about any man around. Lol.
What does the ballistics of an arrow shot from a compound bow have to do with this post?
Furthermore, do a little research and you’ll find quite a bit of information on the FPS and “ballistics” of all types of archery equipment.
If you’d like, I can post the specific bow I bought her, arrow, and field tip weight and with your research you can figure it all out yourself.
