Rimfire target

I have a small range in my basement with a .22 rimfire target made of hardened metal that traps the bullets. Ive been using it for years. Bullets hit the slanted metal, bounce down to a trap on the bottom. For the first time I shot a .22 Mag at the target thinking it was rimfire, should work fine. Well guess again, the .22 Mag almost made it through the backstop. Any more use would make it useless. I found it hard to believe how much more powerful the .22 Mag was than a regular .22 LR.

The .22WMR is no joke. It has roughly 2-1/2 times the power of a .22LR, and has damaged more than a few "rimfire safe" backstops.
When you get your local prairie dog colony educated to 22 rimfire Range , and then you switch over to a savage 22 mag with a good
scope and cci 40 grain hollow points . they soon learn 22 mag cci is not “rimfire “ status
22 magnum is great. I used 22 lr for prairie dogs and even killed coyotes with the lr. I like the 10/22 and went with
select fire 80% receiver and built a 22 magnum. This rifle runs and shoots sub MOA. I could have purchased a bolt action
rifle less expensive, but I had the pleasure of the build and tuning. It is much better in coyotes and prairie dogs.
I meant to post a picture of the build.
Picked up a nice steel bullet trap for the back yard. Read instructions- .22LR, minimum range- 30 yards. .17HMR/ .22 WMR, minimum range 100 yards.
Day-um.
Willing to bet that the 22 Mag bullet was copper, were as 22 Lr are lead. 'Ball' ammo is hard on backstops.
You would have won the bet!
I have a similar set up. Used 1/4" plate set at a 45 degree angle and it will take a 22 mag. +.
You should see what a .17 HMR will do to a steel plate backstop (angled). Ballistic tipped and BTHPs tried their best to blow through the plate. Not near as powerful as the 22 Mag.
.17 Win Mag has awesome power for a rimfire. It will set off tannerite, something my .22 Mag will not do.
