My old man was a FO with the 11th Marines on Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester, New Britain and Peleliu . He was a FO on Peleliu with K Company, Third Battalion, First Marines . On Peleliu he landed on the Point to the left of Eugene Sledge and the 5th Marines.

Marine to the left with his sleeves rolled up and the camo cover

carrying a 75mm round is my father on Peleliu. From the angle of the pack howitzers, they weren't shooting too far away.

My mother's brother, Clark Cook, was in the first wave that came ashore. He kept a diary. He said that he swapped his 03 for an M1 as soon as possible. He talked (not until nearly the end of his life) of a young native girl ( 9-10 y/o) who stayed with his outfit for a few days while they fought Japanese Marines. He spoke of Jap's yelling at them at night and the swelling of their bodies in the heat. After The Canal was secured and his outfit went on to other islands, he stayed and became Joe Foss's armorer for his fighter plane. It was because they both were from South Dakota. They kept in touch until Joe died. Joe always called my uncle "Cookie",

If any of you have HBO on Directv you can watch it on demand for free without commercials on channel 1501. The History channel is spreading it out and was only showing 2 episodes last night.

I allways watch the WWII films, both pacific and european, My dad was in battle of bulge, he was a medic, I allways look for the red cross in the background picture just hoping to catch a glimpse of him, he was there when they liberated Dakau?? spelling, I saw a documentary on the liberation of camps on history few months ago and taped it just to watch for him in the background, same for the pacific, I had two uncles in the marines and am allways on the lookout for them.......

I liked it but it is a film/Series made for today. I find the shows on TV/Movies today are real "jumpy" they don't focus on anything. They just jump from one subject to the next. I figure its the cell phone culture where they want to get info in bits and not the whole story..

Kind of sad IMO but I liked the the story.

Yeah, it’s no Band of Brothers.

Same producers but not the same quality IMHO.

Band of Brothers is better TV, but IMO The Pacific is more compelling.

Also keep in mind that Band of Brothers follows a relatively small number of soldiers for a period of about a year.

The Pacific follows the war from 1942 to 1945.

The Pacific just couldn't be done like BOB.
