Black Shotguns (Assault Shotguns)

Stupid question. I never learned to really appreciate Shotguns. I have one. A 16 ga Winchester 97. Just never had a fondness for them and little desire to add a 12 gauge to the collection.
So here's my question. Is there really a difference for the shotguns that look like an AR15? Is it purely cosmetic? Are most basically clones of Remington semi-auto shotguns? OK, so the AK shotguns use an AK action. I assume all are smooth bore and none are rifled for slugs. Even still, is there an advantage for a black shotgun besides they look big and badass?

Yes there is a difference in the old style shotguns vs the newer magazine or drum fed ones.
Makes for a LOT of lead flying very quick.
Some friends of mine have purchased the VR-80's and I've handled them. If you own and can operate and AR-15 or 10 then these have the same basic controls. 10 round magazines (or more) give one the ability to engage a lot of targets very quickly and reloads are fast. I've got a Benelli M2 with an 8 round tube and it is slow to load even 2 shells at a time. In the time it takes me to shoot 8 and reload 8 my friend Paul has shot 10, reloaded, and shot 10 more. Yeah, I need to practice my loading...
