Am I the only person left in this country who thinks a real pickup has an 8 foot bed??
My 2000 Ram extended cab with 590,000 miles has a 8'6" flat bed now. If I knew how fantastic a flat bed was I would have gotten one on day one of ownership. Short beds are fine for grocery getters but less than useful when used for hauling stuff. I carried over 2,000 pounds of tires today in mine. They would nave fit into a shorter bed.
Even I, the Nissan Man, must admit, there are times when I wish I had an 8 foot bed. I got into Nissans in 1988 and have been driving them ever since. Two of them have rusted out on me in the salt and snow, and another got totalled. Drunk gal drag racing on I 85 at 10 pm, she hit me from behind she was doing 105 at the time.
I am on my fourth one now.
Took the girlfriend on a trip out to Yellowstone last year in the Nissan Frontier. Her car is a Lexus. She could not believe how comfortable the little pickup is she said the passenger's seat was just right.
You asked a good question. I just don't see any later model rigs with a 8 ft bed and extended cab and very few regular cab if if you do ever see a 4 door with a 8 ft bed it looks like a Freight train and take about 40 acres to get it turned around and if at Wal Mart have to Park few miles away and take a Uber to the store. (and buying would new would cost more than a good trailer house. (modular home)
I have a 40 year old 4x4 (that I repair myself) that I use as a daily driver and hunting rig, manual hubs, has overdrive, will cruse easily at 70mph, get good gas mileage, 8 ft bed, AND NO RUST cost $8100 when new with tax and title, cross the bed tool box and can haul my 4 wheeler in the 8ft bed with tail gate up and extras, and can hose down all the inside if want to, no carpets, was actually made as a working type vec , but with the Crewmax 4 door 4x4 tundra and cross bed toolbox have to pull a trailer for hauling 4 wheelers or anything of size that won't fit inside the cab. (and it cost a arm and a leg and not made for hosing out the inside)
Been watching for a 8 ft bed working hunting vec but about as scarce as hen's teeth now days unless you want to spend major $'s and then the vec's is to purty to take take to the woods or get inside with muddy shoes and dirty clothes. (and is going to be obsolete in short period of time, usually shortly after the warranty expires and can only be diagnosed by several rocket scientists and they have to get a second opinion and then the cost of parts MAY NOT FIX THE VEC and they want down payment first. (worse than going to the Dr's office for a medical opinion)
I'll just hang onto my old hunting buggy that get's er dun. I just cannot run with the big dogs and rare back in the seat like a Philadelphia Lawyer wearing a 10 gallon hat when going down the road talking on a cell phone and big mirrors sticking out 2 ft on each side of the rig.
Heard rumor that the new GMC fancy jaw dropping tailgate costs about as much as optional add on as my old 40 year old vehicle cost when new. (and I would bet that my old tailgate is stronger)and some vec's have headlights that cost over $1000 to replace ONE.
Brings up another point. I see lots of later model trucks and vec's (10 years old and less) that body of vec is rusting away, no way any of them would last 40 years and still be going down the road as useable.
Seems a shame and disgusting that they can send rockets to Moon and Mars and beyond but cannot make a vec's windshield wiper blade that cost's $16 for one with several lego plastic adapters and takes a rocket scientist to fig out the puzzle for fit and should only cost $1 for the refill blade) and it will dry rot and harden within a year or less or vec's that don't rust away within 10 years. (but they think that a self driving battery operated vec is the answer to all) Yea sure.

I bought the white F250 8ft bed Farm truck new in 95 about $19,000.00 IIRC, reg cab cloth bench seat rubber mats only extras are AC, cruise control and tow package, it has just about 180k miles on it.
The red F150, I received when my Step-dad passed about 4 years ago it's a 06 with a 6 cyclinder & 8ft bed, I use it more often since it get's better gas mileage, it only had 68k on it when I got, about 83K now.
Good Friday sale at Orscheln farm store yesterday. About a half ton of dirt bags in it.
I bought my disabled brother in laws 2007 Ford Ranger Sport 4x4 last year. Engine is 4.0L SOHC V-6. Truck has 84000 miles on it with new Michelin tires and battery. I wanted a capper for it so my oversized dogs would have a roomy place to ride in and looked for a very long time. The tiny back seat (jump seats) area is just too cramped for them and most likely designed for very young children or dwarf monkeys.
After many months of searching I came across a fairly nice fiberglass topper a guy was selling off of his 6 foot bed Ranger and replacing it with one of those sliding flat tops. The color was a bit off due to fading but at least it is red and I can live with it. Now, I need to find a light weight aluminum ramp. Wide enough for my dogs to ascend and descend into the bed easily.
This photo I stole off the web but matches my truck 100% including condition. I gave my BIL 6K for the truck. Just what he was asking.
A buddy of mine in Scouts has a full length F250 and between him and my Rover we carry the camping gear. There’s a spot we go to up a very steep very twisty trail that requires 4wd and twice his F250 has broken the drivetrain trying to climb and turn with the long wheelbase. My 88” Rover scampers right up there.

I grew up driving pick-ups with 8 foot beds: bench seat, no air, 3 on the tree.
My Dad had a 65 Chevy with a HP 283 that would burn the tires to the rim in first and get rubber in second.
I broke the shifter off speed shifting into third while racing another truck; man was that a job to replace.
TodayWhen you add a super crew cab they are just too long for urban areas.
I drive a Super Crew with a 6.5 bed.
A truck with a 6.5 bed is much more useful than a 5.5 bed.
While I do have an 8ft bed in my work truck it is taken up about 2.5ft by my fuel tank.
My new unit with the 6.6 gas Has a 7 footer. Both have b&w 5th wheel hitches also.

My truck is an 01 6speed ho dodge cab and chassis. Built my own 10' flatbed. 9k Warne , 7' side boxes. ( I like one piece steelhead rods)
Well, I hope everyone is able to find a vehicle they can afford and that works for their needs and wants.
I'm very fortunate. My little pickup is nearly ideal for my lifestyle.
