Whew............ Been a few months, but I took a shower last night...................

First shower in several months. We had ripped the bathroom, the hallway and the stairs out, back to the studs and did a complete remodel / redo. Had a new bath tub and a toilet but, no finished walls or tile, so it was bath only. Project took a lot longer than planned with shortages of material and getting contractors in. I can do dry wall and wire up just about and thing, but plumbing and tile work, there are above my pay grade.

The stairs were a major problem. Several contractors wouldn't even give a price, as they said it was not the kind of work they do. The house is 2 parts. The 2 story side was built in 1861 (The second house my family built after settling here in 1854) and is 24 inch thick field stone walls. The stairs going up stairs were built into the stone work. The stairs and bathroom shared a common wall. The 1 story part was added on in 1921. Finally found a contractor who said old houses were his thing and that new stairs ain't a problem. The stairs, railing and spindles are all oak, look fantastic and 'da wife is so happy. The budget, well not so much.

Is great to have a complete bathroom again and take a nice, long, hot shower.......................... Oh yeah, and stairs that don't creak and moan.

Now, I'm, thinking we need a newer truck and she is thinking that we need a new kitchen floor.

Old houses can be a challenge. Enjoy the steam, and the new kitchen floor.

Finding contractors to do good work is one of the hardest tasks. Glad you can shower again.

Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche

A new truck for you or new floors for her, eh? Enjoy your new kitchen floors! LOL!

Old houses can be a real pain. I always did those as a 'time and material' job because you just never knew what you were going to run into when you started pulling things apart.

Show us a picture of the staircase, it sounds interesting!

Sounds really nice, and glad you and your Mrs. are happy. Good also to hear about your family history with your home! I have a deep appreciation of things that were built back in time. The craftsmanship was so much more showing of the personal pride of those builders! Wood materials were true to measure back then and they had a lot of fine timber to work with. Many craftsmen were artists IMO.

I too would really like to see some pictures of your place 44!

Regarding the truck/kitchen floor question, I suggest you and your wife compromise and get the floor.

It's too late for me, save yourself.

As for the newer truck, lets say the odds ain't in my favor right now.

Brookwood, "true to measure" is a problem when remodeling an older home. Nothing fits, window or doors.

Last years was all new windows. Complete replacement, frame & sill, with a 24 inch set. The 1861 part had 7 windows and the 1921 part, which was normal stick construction had 7 windows. That bill would have just about covered a newer truck. Just a hair over $17K. Every window and frame, it's own size. All custom. All the framing in the old part is 2 X 6. That is in real time, 2 inches by 6 inches.

Will post a few pictures. My mothers side of the family came from Ireland in 1854. Bunch of brothers looking for the new world. Staked out 960 acres !!!!! 5 farms. Great grandfather, George Miller, in the late 1890's into the early 1900's, broke and trained mules to harness for the US Army. I have hanging on my office wall, his branding iron. A big letter M.

Today, all that is left is the 40 acres we own and the fact that our road is named after the boys, Miller Road.

Truck vs new floor. Remember you have to sleep some time! Either you better learn to do it with one eye open or go with the new floor. A happy wife makes for a happy life and a P.O.ed one makes for a short life. 😀 Bob

Convince her that you need the new truck to HAUL THE MATERIALS for the new floor.

Ya, it probably won't work, but at least you tried.
