Double stimulus payment, anyone?

An acquaintance and his wife each received $1,400 stimulus payments a while back. Then a couple of weeks later they each got another $1,400 payment. He wondered whether they should try to return the extra $2,800. I advised him to set the money aside in case they are asked to provide a refund, but trying to send the money back unprompted could lead to the entire government having an apoplectic seizure of confusion. I have to wonder -- if this couple each got a double payment, how many thousands and thousands of others did the same? Has anyone you know gotten a double dip? The whole stimulus thing just gets weirder and weirder. 🤔

Your advice is sound: hold onto the duplicate payments. When the Treasury Departments wants that money back- and they will, instructions will be provided as to where and how to return it.
This is something I won't be having to worry about. But I wish folks well that try to keep money that isn't theirs.

I would guess 95 to 99 % will never return it even when directed to do so
and for most that will be the end of it unless of course your a working middle class law abider then they will come for you the rest well they know its a lost cause to even ask . but I think of the countless billions of dollars gong to pet projects and friends of the politician's what the actual people received is just a drop in the bucket
Would that be worse than the Government giving what isn't theirs to give?
I got zero, so that is what I am sending back.
If the gov't can put money in your bank account, they sure as heck can also take it out!
I mean folks could end up in jail.

I'd just shred or burn it, then if they come looking for it just tell them what you did with it, no harm done. Cashing or depositing it you run a big risk and big trouble with Uncle Sam, not worth it to me.

And if they deposit it directly into your bank account?
Good point.....my bank would send it back at my request, let it be a headache for the IRS to straighten out.
