This is Oregon...
in my rear view mirror!
Started making the move to Montana yesterday. This is going across the bridge at Umatilla into Washington, crossing the Columbia River.
9 hours behind the wheel towing a utility trailer, I don't know how you long haul truckers do it! I only stopped for fuel (3 times) and to let the dogs out to do their business.
Today I'll get the trailer and pickup unloaded and then head to town and start looking for a competent outfit to do some millwork and doors. My cabinet guy back in Oregon is doing new doors for the kitchen cabinets for me but logistically it makes more sense to get someone local to do all the trim.
I need to look into some alternative heat sources also. Right now the house has two propane fireplaces (one upstairs, one down) that don't heat the house very well/evenly. There's also a big wood cook stove (a pretty modern one) between the kitchen and dining room. A great back-up heat source! I'd like to do a boiler fired hydronic system but that'll entail tearing out all the sheetrock ceilings in the basement, running the pipe, insulating, and then running pipe for 3 radiators in the basement. I had one fella bid $12,000 for a system and that was with me running all the pipe! Yikes!
When I pulled up I was greeted by 6 whitetail does down in the pasture and they later moved up pretty close to the house and a coyote was singing just before I hit the hay last night. It was dead quiet and black as the inside of a cow last night. Got the best nights sleep I've had in years!!

Great, hope you love your new home! We hope to be right behind you within the next couple years. I have two 30 foot vans, and am going to be getting a 48 footer also. Window shopping for a Peterbilt or Kenworth too as I am out and about. It will be a wonderful day when I am east of Spokane, and I can see Washington in the rear view mirrors, and she's a rollin' smoke.
Don't know how black it is inside of a cow, only been up to my shoulder in a few trying to turn a stuck calf, but falling asleep to a 'yote singing is a great thing. As much as I love hunting coyotes, their singing is special to listen too.
Sounds like a neat place. Enjoy.
Congratulations on the move, enjoy it!
I am truly happy for you Neo. I hope you and your bride enjoy many happy years there.
Sound good.
I don't know how the truckers do it either.
My eyes overload anymore if I drive more than two hours.
Great move for you.....I hope you find all you are looking for at the new place...by the sounds of it I think you are on the right track !!!
And now the "work" begins, good luck on the remodel!
Best of luck on your new dream. Someday soon I hope to see the Socialist State of NY in my rear view mirror.-----------------Ray
My last trip from New Germany was 2 years ago. Many 7-1/2 hour trips to have a new house built, move every thing & get old houses ready to sell. I only miss a few people & the food. Neo, I'm sure you'll fit in & find many like minded friends.
Enjoy a long fruitful retirement!
I am very happy for you. Will you be changing your forum name?
And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain
Last time I went to Flori duh I had a similar view when crossing the state line headed north.
Very best part of the trip.
Hope you "live long and prosper" at you new place of peace and happiness.
Big Sky Country. Nice.
Check into Toyo Stoves. They're very popular here in Alaska.
congrats on the move , sure hope all goes well with it , any chance you're going to be around BSR ? he's southeast of Butte some where
Great Move
Whew! Just sat down for dinner after the first day. Lots of note taking, things that need fixed now, things to do later. Getting the plan pulled together is almost more work than doing the work!
I'm SW of Kalispell so still quite a ways from BSR and MJ.
No plan on changing the forum name. I've been NeoBlackdog for too long to get used to something else. I'll just need to figure out what NEO stands for now that it's no longer North East Oregon!
Thanks for all the well wishes, folks. Much appreciated.
Neo, I have always pictured you like this! 🙂
With all this going for you, you should do very well in Montana! All the best.....Joel
Now that's funny right there!
NEO = New Environment Opportunities? 😁
In Latin, "neo" is the preface meaning "new" so it remains entirely apropos for you, good sir. Everything from today onward is new.
