started shopping for new truck......#$#@%$*(()

had a basic price I wanted out of my old truck and a max for a newer one, took a short test drive and was hoping they would have a ballpark estimate on difference by time I got back, less 10 minutes. NO I sat there almost an hour and they were $2700 over what I told the salesman I wanted to pay, I said no and got up to leave, of course he said he would go back to his manager and see if they could come down. 15 minutes later he comes back and says they have come to the price but the tax and fees is what put it over, I said I knew that, that was why I said my max was with tax,title ect, out the door.

he followed me out to my truck and kept asking what he could do, I told him either get his boss to come up on trade in price, or he could write me a check for the $2700 difference, as he walked off another salesman came over and asked if I minded telling him what they offered me for my truck, I told him and he said he would give me $500 more for it himself, and If I wanted to sell it to let him know he was looking for an older truck in good shape.

I am tempted to give him a call tomorrow and sell it to him.....

    Too many used (previously owned) vehicles to take a beating on.

    Look until you find what you want, make dealer an offer. Walk if the don't meet your price.

    As you may already know look in the mirror before you go shopping to make sure you don't have "I'm stuuupid" written across your forehead.

    Doc fees is the tool they use sucker punch you with every time., they just can't understand what "out the door" means.

    Last time I looked for a good family auto to drive in the winter, have one for summer and one for salt season, I could fill all the mega bites GB forum has to offer with bad experiences.

    Was looking for nice late Tahoe LTZ, found one close to my price range, called on it, sold but I do have a nice Yukon Denali though.

    Reply, I don't like the way the front looks on the Jimmy, change my mine, cash and OTD. Boy I sure like the way the Jimmy drives and handles. The 6.2 engine is a hoss, likes fuel especially if you have a heavy foot.😉

    By the way the dealership was Chevrolet.

    What I found works at car dealers is when the salesman says let me go talk to the boss,you say you have my number,call me when you find out.Do not sit in the cubby waiting on the salesman.They do not want you to leave without making a deal because chances are you will go somewhere else.

    Trucks are at a premium now in our neck of the woods, southern Missouri/northern Arkansas. Chevy dealers are sending me letters asking me to trade because they want my truck. Most would lowball me and then add 25k to the resale price.

    I owe about 23k on it, used on the lot it would be tagged at 45k at a minimum.

    I am lucky. My son-in-law is a finance manager at a major dealership so he always gets me a great deal.

    He does the same for any customer who asks for him to assist them although he isn't a salesman. He works his rear off to close deals that others have let walk.

    He and #3 never buy new vehicles.

    My 2017 Tacoma was $33000 then. The KBB 'trade in' value is between $30000 and $32500 now. I could probably sell it for more than I paid to a private party! The demand for these things is through the roof.

    Sooooooo why are you selling it? I'm of the opinion if it can still move its own sorry rusted hulk down the road, it's worth keeping. One monthly car payment will pay for a whole lot of brakes, shocks and alternators. Keep going around the truck renewing parts and pretty soon it's "new" and you'll get another 10-15 years out of it.

    I'm at 450,000 miles on my '63 Land Rover with no end in sight. And it doesn't use oil. And realistically no bolt on that thing is more than 5 years old.

    Car loans these days look more like mortgages to me. My inner self still exists in the past. My conscience creates great turmoil from within when confronted with a car salesman. I will avoid them like a plague!

    I don't think I would ever buy a new vehicle ever again. I have worked in two factory dealerships, turning wrenches, and they pretty much suck. They get sued a lot; and they usually lose.

    I think the trick is to be on the lookout for a deal from an individual seller before you really need, but want a replacement. People often need or want to sell a car right away, and everybody hates car dealers. Start watching craigslist and other sources and be ready to pounce. Have the money in place and don't be afraid to low ball them. You can always go up. And spend the hundred dollars or so to get a competent mechanic to do an inspection. It can save you thousands of dollars and lots of tears.

    I have a 2002 siveraldo king cab, with 110,000 miles on it, runs great but is starting to show its age, few bubbles of rust on rear fenderwells, no holes except in rear bumper. I don't really care if its chevy, ford, or toyota, but need at least a 6 and half foot bed as I haul my honda side by side in the bed, I just don't want to pull a trailer. this leaves out all the new 4 door trucks as they have 6ft beds, same with tacoma's, rangers, and colorados, they are to narrow. was looking at a 2018 silverado with 28,000 miles, they wanted $29,900 and offered me $4000 for mine, salesman offered me $4500 cash, said he wanted it himself.


    I could probubly drive it another year or two, but my health has limited crawling around under it to fix it anymore, and I just want to trade up for newer truck with less miles I or my wife, could trust to take on long trip if needed, she got a new RAV4 when I retired in 2018, I have limited myself to $25,000 max to pay for the difference, I could go more but this is all I am comfortable taking out of my retirement account, I figure anything I get with less than 40-50,000 will last me rest of my life, as I only drive3-4,000 miles a year on average

    My 2005 Frontier 98k miles, bought it new 2006. I would like to get a Tacoma, but, since this one is running just fine. I think I will hold off for right now.

    Run like hell from GM. The LED headlights burn out by the millions and cost $$$$ to replace. Ever notice how many GM vehicles have one LED light burned out as you drive down the road?? The radio is part of the ECU and if it dies so does the truck$$$$$$$$$.

    Spend 4-6K on getting a new bumper, new body panels and a fresh paint job. WIth that few miles and as little as you drive it will last the remainder of your life plus some.

    It ain't just GM. Talk to any good mechanic, especially one who owns his shop. There are Fords, Chevys, and Dodges, yes I still call em Dodge , trucks setting around waiting for camshafts or whole engines, transmissions, whatever. And parts are just as expensive.

    My 2006 Ram Big Horn is showing signs of age, so I've been thinking about upgrading, too. Friend has a Ram Longhorn, went on a trip with him & got the fever for one of my own. Lot in town had one, 2 yrs old, less than 50k miles, just right. $60k! That's SIXTY THOUSAND DOLLARS! I guess I'll never have one of those.

    Closing in on 600,000 miles on mine now. The seat no longer fit my behind so for 230 bucks I bought a new cushion from GENO's and now my butt is happy again.

    Actually I figured it up and I have about 1,650,000 total miles on my behind. Being a on the road in service and sales since 1979 adds up a lot of miles FAST. My week is somewhere between 1,000 and 1,500 miles with 1,300 about average.

    I probably should have mentioned it is a Cummins 5.9 running a FS2500 bypass oil filter system.

    These are the things I know have gone wrong. The crankshaft position sensor failed at 2,000 miles. The radiator cracked last spring, I have had the batteries replaced twice since new (March of 2000), ball joints go about 100K, I had 379,000 miles on the factory u-joints then could not get over 30-40K out of new ones no matter the brand. The last set has gone about 100K and are getting a bit loose. The ABS sensor went nuts and was replaced about 5 years ago. The belt idler pulley was causing a vibration and replaced. The front timing gear cover was leaking, it is now fixed. The Vacuum pump was leaking oil and fixed a while back. I had the tranny rebuilt at 300K but it really did not need it. It has had the rear springs replaced and the fuel level sensor replaced. I had LED headlights and tail lights installed. The valve cover gasket was replaced by me about 10 years ago. Oil and filter changes every 10-12,000 miles.

    I run Rotella T-6 synthetic oil, it consumes a quart in 7,500 miles average.

    It has a hellbent steel pitman arm stabilizer on it and a hellbent steel death wobble eliminator installed, they work GREAT!

    I have found that a lot of people seldom check or change oil, I saw a Cummins 6.7 torn down that had sludge so thinck you could not see the crank journals, it burned that motor into scrap with 94,000 miles on it. Stupid people keep mechanics busy.

    Maintain stuff and it will last a long time, ignore maintenance and you will pay a stupid tax for it.

    Oh, the dash is all cracked but black Gorilla tape fixed it right up.

    I hated doing it, but after being stranded for the third time in the past five years (on super bowl Sunday 2020!) by my 2007 6.0 Powerstroke I’d had enough. It just turned 100,000 mi, as I put no more than 8,000 miles a year on my trucks, but they’re used to tow the trailers and boat through the desert with the family so it’s not often doing any soft highway driving. I do 4500 mile oil changes, replaced three turbo boots, new alternator and new belts at 80k, etc.

    Last April I went to my local Ford dealer (the sales managers wife works for me) and asked for a 2019 XLT 6.7 long bed, four door, 4x4. The 2020 has a new design ten speed tranny I didn’t trust, and they want a fortune for them. They searched and found one 2019 left with what I wanted down in El Centro Ca. It was driven to my local store for me the next day.

    I traded in my lemon (No body damage and really clean looking, but the #8 glow plug was out...I got $6.5k for it, good riddance) I drove the new one off the lot for $47,800 OTD. Deals can be found, especially if you don’t mind buying last years model.

    Yeah, the payment stinks but peace of mind is priceless. (The Tahoe behind it is my work car.)

    I'm at 101k miles on my 2006 Frontier.

    Would not buy another one. The pink milkshake (factIory defect) finally got me about 3 years ago to the tune of $5000 for a new radiator and rebuilt transmission. Previously the Timing Chain Tensioners got me for about the same $$$$.

    I figure, I might as well keep it as it should be good for another 100k and I'll never get back what I have invested in it.

    My driveway is starting to look like Select-Fire's...

    After growing up in a GM town, I have little use for the UAW. What is puzzling is that the Toyota workers average $10 - $20 dollars per hour less in total hourly compensation, so why do comparable Toyota products cost the same or more than GM products? For instance if you compare the Tacoma to the Colorado with the same features, the Tacoma is usually a couple of thousand more. I guess we just like sending those extra profits overseas.

    I am hoping I did my bypass in time. I changed the ATF four times, so far so good. Will never have another Nissan thou. I thought about getting a new radiator, but not going to. If the transmission goes out, I will get a new truck, a Toyota Tacoma.

    Could it be that Toyota uses higher quality components, which might be one of the reasons they seem to last longer than most GM vehicles?

    My shipping crate truck for a 5.9 Cummins will hit 600,000 miles some time in June. Still chuckle-puckling along just fine. I ain't buying a new one for over twice what I paid for this one and costing the same as my firsts two houses combined.

    My 2015 Ford F150 just rolled over 50K....the last time I took it in for an oil change, the dealer tried real hard to get me to consider a new truck....I told him I figure they have lots of folks that would like to get into this one....a 60K new one is a little harder to move right now....I will keep this one a while longer

    The TRD Sport suspension is more tuned for on road driving, so says Toyota. The Off Road has some more exclusive features, like the black flares and the crawl control and limited slip diff.

    That 6.0 will bring $20-$27k here! I wouldve sold that one outright... Love to go back to the lot and see what they have on it. Theres a 1995 F350 down the road that has $15k on the window, single cab with no bed on it

    I have a Tundra that is a great truck,but I have a 99 Nissan Frontier that refuses to die.It will probably roll over to 500,000 miles in the next month or two.I bought the Tundra when the Nissan had about 375,000 and I thought it could not last much longer-Wrong- Pre 2000 Frontiers were some of the best small trucks ever made.Sometime after that the were bought out by Renault,who are famous for building junk and Nissan quality took a dive as expected.
