They are WATCHING!!!

Ricci.WrightRicci.Wright Member Posts: 5,127 ✭✭✭✭

Every key stroke it would seem. Yesterday I went to a site and plugged in the vin to my van, my van vin, and printed a full spec sheet, which was cool. In ten minutes I was getting adds for sites wanting me to pay for the same info. The same if I look at a watch info site, or toilet seat or salad forks or anything else. They are taking over every aspect of our lives, seeping into every crevice and I don't think anything short of nuclear war will stop it. Thank you Al Gore!!

Ricci, it matters hugely which browser you are using. Chrome and Edge track literally every keystroke you make (as you suspected). The two browsers that are the least intrusive are Firefox and Brave - and can be made even more so depending on settings you choose.

Your operating system also has a big effect. Apple and Windows are specifically designed to monitor and report your every action. People get tired of hearing me tout Linux, but if you value your privacy, Linux is the answer. Of the many variants, Mint and Feren seem to be the most privacy conscious. Search their home web pages to read about it.

I wrote a short article about how to try (without installing) Linux, and then installing it if you choose to. PM me with your email to get a copy.

    That’s why I don’t eat salad.

I didn't mention above, but assume that most of you have also changed your search engine defaults away from Google and Yahoo to avoid being tracked for ads. I use Duck Duck Go and have heard that Qwant does not do tracking, either.

Oh, and the offer to send you my Linux article is open to anyone. Just put your email in a PM.

It's also your smart phone that listens.Just repeat a slogan around the house for five or ten minutes and see if that saying pops up later on you smart phone one way or another. It's not the Shadow that knows now. it's artificial intelligence !

According to Gallup Research, 80% of millennials place “some” or “a lot” of trust in companies to keep their data secure, and are the generation most likely to say they think that their data is kept private. The truth is you have no right to privacy — and you probably never did.

Facebook makes most of their money by datamining -> selling the information.

Me too, been using it for over a year. When you click on a site, you can actually see all the cookies it blocks that google and other liberal sites want on your device.

First and last bump to say that the offer of the Linux Installation Tips article is still open to all. Several people have PM'ed with their email addys, so there is definitely interest. All you need to explore Linux is a USB thumb drive, and there's no risk or requirement to actually switch systems unless you choose to.

PM with your email, so I can attach it.
