Got out and did some hiking this weekend
There are some trails up on the hill just across the valley from my house. The trail system has about 15 miles of trail in varying loops and the hiker can enjoy some incredible vistas, if so inclined (pardon the pun).
While out this weekend, I saw two snakes I've never encountered in all my days hiking. One was a beautiful green yellow western yellow-bellied racer. It was about 1.5 inches in diameter and about 4 feet long. The way the color shifted from green to yellow was quite beautiful.
The second was a good sized bullsnake. Incredible markings on it. This one was about 6 feet long and closer to 3 or 4 inches in diameter just back from the head.
Both were out sunning themselves in the waning hours of the evening sun in the middle of the trail. Both were very docile and content to stay where they were until I encouraged them to move a bit with my trekking pole. Without much urging they were on their way and so was I.
Rather than posting a bunch of pics here, I will just link you to the All Trails site that has many gorgeous photos of the hiking area.
And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain

Beautiful country!
EXCELLENT. My kind of area. Here in southern Illinois you go out mushroom hunting you better have OFF on and a lot of it. The ticks are like finding pennies in a wishing well.😕
There are ticks out this time of year, but the path is very brush free so there isn't a lot of worry about them, at least around here. My wife found one on her from another lil hike we did nearer our place, so they are definitely out there.
