Skunk!

Been awful bad outside for a couple hours. Maybe hit and crawled up by the house before dying or sprayed close to the house. No wind.
Took the dog out twice on a leash, don’t want to break out the skunk wash kit!
We’ve lived here for over 35 years, worst we’ve ever had. May ask the daughter that didn’t get her sense of smell back yet to swing by in the morning for the maximum test!

Ya been a bad boy?
spring breading season for them there out and about , some times get into battles with each other ,
we get a nice strong odor a few times in the spring where there working out the details with each other . I have heard if the female is not accepting offers she may spray the male not sure but seems likely
we have two lived here about three or four years ( the skunks ) there was four but two left out last year .
about three years ago one of dogs got it 😐️ skunked . never a good time for any one
the cats share there food and even eat together at times with them with no issues , the dogs we would not chance it the out come is obvious . so we keep them away from the area at night
I have been up close and personal with them more than a few times ( dozens at least ) I just talk in a calm voice and do not make any fast erratic moves . just in case .
I even released one twice ( I think the same one ) out of a life trap I had set for a racoon , I slowly opened the door for it and let go on its way . never seemed scared or acted like I was about to get sprayed . lucky maybe LOL
they are not aggressive and as long as they do not feel threatened they seem to be good neighbors they hate to waste there spray if they can avoid it and do not see well at night
I lost track of the times I have just stepped back a step or two give them a path or way out so they do not feel I am a threat and they will go on there way . they do steal a egg or two sometimes , we met a few times in the chicken coop . I do not block the exit and they will stroll on out
I will admit in the past I have helped a few on to skunk Valhalla . I would go at night just walk up next to them they do not see well and did not startle or scare them with in a foot or so and well no more skunk and none of them in a last ditch effort sprayed . I hear is common
as for the current ones if they get out of line I will live trap them and take them on a road trip . I have done a few in the past just toss a cover over the trap and keep it over as I open the door and they are glad to be free and just run off into the woods
I learned from wildlife officer Chris Gilky that moving a trapped animal is illegal in Ohio. I felt bad for a poor possum and took it for a ride to an open hilly area about a mile down the road in the Honda side by side letting it out. I saw the officer on the trip back explaining what I had done to save the poor critter. He said "that is illegal". Boy did that surprise me. He said I had to release it where trapped or euthanize it on the spot. They don't want diseased animals being moved where they can spread what ever they might have.
He was very professional about it not giving me any tickets or a tongue lashing. He did not even shoot me DRT in the road! We chatted quite a while about game numbers in my area. I really appreciated his demeanor and honest efforts to keep game hunters on the right path.
my catch and release are about 1/2 mile +/- from my house in each direction one way is the river the other way a creek with a tree line surrounded by farming fields . and most likely where I get the visitor's from .
I never knew of the law about releasing them I started doing it for my wife sake she has a huge heart when it comes to animals . she killed a rat many years ago with a pitch fork and it screaming as it was being perforated got to her .
Well may have been a turf war last night then. Didn’t find any bodies between the house and the road this AM.
May have to be more cautious with the pup in the evenings for a while. He doesn’t like normal baths, so I’m sure a de-skunking would cause both of us a lot of hard feelings!
My cat got hammered by a skunk and I washed him up with tomato juice. I had to wash him 3 times, in an hour, but it did knock out the skunk smell pretty well.
I will remember the coconut oil trick, I hope I never have to deal with that again.
I read somewhere that the trick was to lather or lay on the cleanser before you wet the animal that has been sprayed. Maybe to keep from opening hair follicles and/or pushing the spray deeper into the fur/skin?
This worked well for me. 1 quart hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda, 1 tsp. liquid detergent. Mix together and while still bubbling, wash dog. I was a little too careful to keep it away from the dog's lips and for several days every time he drank water the traces of skunk around his mouth would re-activate and smell some.
We used the peroxide/BS mix when our dog/deck got skunked. Works real well!
Another vote for peroxide/ BS mix. Unless you are making Bloody Marys- then stick to the tomato juice.
Ya! You just have to rename your pet Marilyn 😁
it never bleached out any of our dogs . I thought about that the first time round with it
maybe because it diluted ? but I rather have a blond dog than a stinky one
...Reminds me...took a fellow Ins Adjuster to look at a house that had a small fire...while he was in the attic checking for damage, what he "thought" was a cat...sprayed him good..:)...I wouldnt let him back in my truck...we called his wife who brought him a change of clothes and a blanket to cover her truck seat...:)...dang he smelled bad...
My yellow Lab got hit by one that wandered into her kennel many years ago. My house is 104 feet from the kennel, but the odor was so bad it made my eyes water when I went out the door. I scrubbed her down with a mix of hydrogen peroxide and liquid soap, and it worked pretty well.
My dog rolled around in some nasty animal guts a few months back. It wasn't skunk but it was nasty. She rolled right on her neck, nasty black and green rotten guts from a dead possum or some such thing.
It wasn't skunk but it was the next best thing. I took the collar off and put that mutt into the bathtub and soaped her up with the Dr. Bronner's peppermint soap. One time shampoo and I had a clean mutt!
I bet this stuff would work pretty well for skunk smell.
I'm not sure why, but any time someone smells a skunk it seems they need to announce it to everyone, particularly if in the car. It's like ok man, we all know.
And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain
