Opening Day of Trout Season Here

I took a ride in my EZ-Go golf cart this morning down to the little creek in the swamp about a mile away. The roads getting there are unpaved and not travelled too much as most are the same here in the boonies where I live. I had with me my ultra lite spinning combo and a can of worms and was wearing my fishing vest equipped with some tackle for just in case.

The tunnel going under the road was my first stop and having to make my way through some thick brush found a clear spot with a clear opening for my first line release. That worm barely hit the water and I had a nice 9" Brookie hooked and on the bank! 😋 Within about 45 minutes I had my limit of 5.

Sunday morning will be having an English breakfast!

Oh my. Creeks here are filled with hog nosed suckers, no trout. Occasionally a bass will appear. Current River on the other hand is filled with oodles of game and rough fish. I am so looking forward to putting a hook in the water.

Can't get to my fishing places until the end of July-Early August. Snow or snowdrifts block access until then.

...There arent any trout around here...its all Bass fishing.

...My best friend wifes parents own a lodge on the Conjeos River in Co., go up there end of July.

...I cant fly fish at all...use an ultra lite rod with Salmon eggs :). My buddies father in law gave me funny looks because I couldnt use a fly rod, walking upstream following him. I'd throw it and it would wrap around me in 2 seconds, fooey on that...ultra lite rod/reel worked fine, caught a limit in an hour or so everyday.

The first time I was up there, I was catching a lot of trout, but they were all small (12"-14")...another fisherman saw me and ask why I was throwing all the fish back, "because they are all small ones" I told him. Those trout were small compared to the bass I am used to catching, duh me. :) The guy informed me that those were all keepers. Great fishing but had a limit in no time, so didnt get to fish very long each day, bummer....

...Co. Fish & Game stock rainbows, cutthroats and browns once a week just up stream from the lodge, killer fishing every year...

When I was growing up we had a trout season here in upstate SC.I cant remember if the season opened March 1st or April 1st but dad would be off work and I would stay out of school that day and we would go trout fishing opening day and always limit out.

I took my motor home on a trip to attend a nephews wedding in Colorado some years ago. Found a nice campground somewhere west of Glenwood Springs that had a nice creek flowing just behind my camp site. I was told upon arrival that fishing was allowed and no license was needed there.

After scrounging around for live bait (caught in the wild), a few crickets made short work of catching 4 very nice 10-12" Rainbows. I seasoned them up that same afternoon and had them cooking on my portable George Forman propane grill when the campground manager came by, driven by the pleasant aroma. When I answered his question about what was cooking he turned about three shades of red in the face! And his demeanor instantly changed from a polite host into a total butt hole. Loudly informing me that all fishing there was CATCH & RELEASE! 😲

A totally unheard of phrase up to that time by this visiting tourist and one that didn't make a lot of sense either. My only reaction was my defensive ignorance of their law and he could have let me know when I checked in. He just stormed off and treated me like crap those last couple days I was there.

On a side note; Those were the best trout I ever ate! 😁

Not a big fan of fresh water fish crappie are ok but local catfish and bass not interested. I prefer grouper, flounder, snapper etc.

Why don't we go to school and work on the weekends and take the week off!
