My wife is taking an intro to pistol shooting class tonight.

I never thought I would see this day. She bought her first pistol recently and is going to a class for women at one of the more prominent ranges locally. I am pretty excited she is doing this. I got her outfitted with a small range bag for the event last night and as I added things to the bag she kept saying "Am I really going to need that?" Odds are good that she won't need most of it of course, but I wanted her to be prepared and more importantly to feel confident.

We talked a bit about her taking this course, both knowing that I could teach her the fundamentals she needs, but when we discovered the range was supplying the ammo for the class, it was a no brainer! 😁

The instructor is known for telling the class that husbands are not the ones who should be teaching their wives, not because we don't know, but because a lot of times wives don't want to listen to their husbands. That is not the case with us. She was more than happy to have me teach her everything, but the ammo sealed it.

Before doing this I had her read a book on firearms and concealed carry. As she was reading it she kept saying "I feel like I already know everything in this book because you talk about all this stuff all the time." Apparently, she listens more than I give her credit for. I told her odds are good that all the things the instructor says in this class will be things I have already told her, as well. Talk and knowing are only half the battle though, she needs to get to shooting. 😀

    Two observations;

    1. It is a good thing that she is taking the class

    2. It is a better that someone else is teaching her. You probably know as much as the teacher but she won't feel the pressure to perform that she would with you.

Just tell her to pay close attention to the instructor and not worry too much about being perfect, (see what I did there), perfection will come from practice. The big thing tonight should be safety. Bob

My wife did this about 7 years ago at the bass pro with an indoor range. Within about 6months she was running the ladies shooting league there, which was great- I got to keep all the brass!

She really wanted me to teach her until she found out that ammo was included. She bought the first few boxes for her pistol and sticker shock is an understatement. She also discovered exactly how little 1000 rounds actually is.

    Good for her, congrats.

What is her pistol of choice??

I was a safety officer/instructor for one of the Well Armed Woman chapters. Many of the women said they would rather learn from anyone but their husbands.

Glad your wife is getting some training, Randy. Hope she has a good time!

Did you put fingernail clippers and file in her bag?

If you wouldn't mind sharing what book or books you found to be appropriate, I'd like to know what they are.

In the Gravest Extreme: The Role of the Firearm in Personal Protection

    by Massad Ayoob

I read this book years ago and i still remember information I gleaned from it. I would recommend to anyone thinking about, or actually carrying a gun. The man has some great advice. In fact I am going to order myself another copy right now.

She bought herself a SIG P365XL with the RomeoZero. Here is her target from the class. The one high flyer middle left (which I guess is middle bottom since it rotated?) was the instructor shooting her gun after clearing an out of battery condition for her.

She said there were only two other gals there that had their own pistol. One that refused to bring it because her husband bought it for her and she didn't like it, and the other brought it and didn't like it for the same reason (both revolvers). The rest used guns provided by the range. My wife was the only one there who brought her own gun, loved it, and shot well with it and I guess there were a few that were kind of jealous of her. They put her down at the end of the line and she just spent most of the range time plinking away at her target and getting to know her gun. The rest were busy trying different guns and trying to figure out what they liked. I am super happy she went because the class really just reinforced everything we talk about and practice at home. Other comments included "my gun felt a little bigger than I expected when actually shooting it, there was more recoil than I thought there would be, and it was loud but it was really manageable, just unexpected at first." She had never shot a hand gun in her life.

I did not. I don't normally bring them myself. Do you?

I like the book Ricci mentions. The one I currently have and loan out is Armed Response by David Kenik. I really like it.

Looks like she did very well, especially for a first time shooting her gun!

One other cool thing was I told her she should try to pick up a speed loader since I didn't have one already that would work for her mags. She did and used it during the range time "I'm never loading mags without this thing!" I guess she loved it. When she showed it to me, I could see why. It's a nice, universal UpLula one (better than what I had already!) that will work with other gun mags I have. Score!

    Sounds like she did well.

I'm scheduled to give DIL a couple hours of SD training and new pistol break in Friday. We're NOT going to begin with her shooting the small frame 9mm Glock that she picked cause it was cute.

She did great!!!! Be sure to tell her so.

  • pickenuppickenup Member Posts: 22,844 ✭✭✭✭

Yes I do. They are a small item that fits easily. I have used them a number of times and have loaned them out a few times as well. I don't know how she takes care of her nails, but when you need to trim one....

Of course most of the time a when a nail breaks, it is tearing down a stage and putting away the props. Don't imagine she had to do much of that. LOL

    By looking at those targets.

    When you said..

"She had never shot a hand gun in her life."

That is impressive. She did FANTASTIC!!!

Judging by those targets it looks like she's a natural! Nice!
