what ammo can i use in this rifle safely? i am confused . what i seen states 7x 57. whixh to me indicates a 7mm. i loaded a 8mm mauser in the mag and it went into the chamber and ejected with no problem ( not fired)
so if it is 7mm why would a 8mm fit?

They are available in both the 7mm and 7.92 version best I recall.
Turn a loaded 8MM upside down and see if the bullet goes into the muzzle almost up to the case mouth. If you do the same with a 7MM it will take the bullet without resistance up to the case mough and possibly further if 8MM
That pretty much tells you the caliber. Also, try a 8mm bullet in the muzzle. If it almost goes in up to the case mouth it is a 8mm.
The above answers are right on track. As for your question if it is a 7mm then why would an 8mm fit... it wouldn't. Even though both cases are 57mm, the .323 bullet of the 8mm would likely not fit into the .284 throat of the 7mm without an extreme amount of force.
thanks for the info. sometimes i amaze myself. i forgot i had a cheap set of verniers, so i just measured the bore. i got 8.6 MM🙄 first picture is the 7mm. second is the 8mm
