Winchester 1892 proof markings

Turkeyshoot3 Turkeyshoot3 Member Posts: 3

My 32-20 src serial number 292301 has proof markings but my 44-40 serial number 283187 doesn’t have proof marks? Is my 44-40 a legitimate Winchester?

I found an earlier forum that said proof markings started in April/may 1905 so I guess that would answer my question if I knew when each was made

The serial numbers on both of your rifles place their manufacture in the time frame of when Winchester was converting to proof marks. In spite of what some claim, Winchester rarely made a sudden change in hardly anything. Good usable parts were never discarded. Changes were evolved into, not drop dead changes. Unless you have reasons to believe otherwise, chances are both your '92 are legitimate.

The WP proof started in May of 1905, right about serial number 300,000 for the 1892.
