When was the last time you checked your spare tire?

beneteaubeneteau Member Posts: 8,552 ✭✭✭

Checked mine today for the first time in several months (compact/donut). Should be 60psi and was only 14psi. I'll start checking more often.

Depending on age, a drop in pressure is not unusual. Rubber deteriorates and the higher the tire pressure is, the greater potential for a leak.

It's too late for me, save yourself.

Took mine out about two weeks ago and put it in the Armory garage. It bounced kind of "OK", when I threw it out of the back of the pickup. I saw it just this morning leaning up against the wall in the garage.

That is a good plan, right?

It took me a few years to find my spare. Hidden away under my cargo compartment. I also found a brand new jack!! 😁

All kidding aside, thanks for the reminder Ben!

Thanks for the reminder. They do tend to get "lost" hiding under the bed of a pickup.

Mine lives on the hood of my Rover... bugger is constantly in the way. But easy to check the pressure! 55psi.

    It's checked every oil change.

Bought a used truck from a dealer about 70 miles away.

Thought I had checked it out well but frame was rotted from spreading salt.

While I was checking frame I dropped the spare tire which still had the little mold tits on the tread.

Sidewall was rotted through where it sat on support :(

Found out our Pacifica didn't have a spare when I hit a curb and ruined a tire. AAA can't do much in that case!

YOu got spare? You are lucky.

A friend got a dashboard warning that one of his tires was low. A check of all four revealed no problem. Turned out to be the spare.

A few months ago. But, I also carry a 12 volt compressor along with a tar strip tire patch kit.

    don't have a spare,,

  • MobuckMobuck Member Posts: 14,165 ✭✭✭✭

I carry TWO spares in my work pickup. One under the bed on the OEM hanger and another in the bed with a security cable. Also carry a floor jack, breaker bar with proper sized socket, little 12V compressor, 1/2 dozen pieces of 2x6, and sometimes a cordless impact wrench.

We have lots of flats around here so best be prepared--there ain't no AAA, roadside assistance, and it might be hours before another vehicle comes by.

I check mine, one evening I was checking tire pressure on my truck. Crawled under the bed with a pressure gage, and air hose. That's when I discovered my spare was gone. I thought the cable must have snapped, and lost the tire going down the road. Nope, that wasn't it, the cable lift was also gone, there were no broken bolts, holes were clean.

Someone got under there and stole the whole assembly. I think I narrowed it down to a boat ramp, glad they didn't take my trailer!

I stopped carrying a spare years ago. A bottle of slime and an electric pump take less space and i get better mpg.

If i need a new tire, thats what AAA is for

we never go that far away from home 99% of the time any more if we go on vacation ( 5 yrs since last one ) I will check the spare and toss a can of fix a flat or similar product in with the luggage .

most flats ( slow leakers ) I catch at home and repair we do check tire pressure and watch the ones in use often

when younger I had many ,many, blow outs on a pick up I had loaded with any where from 2 too 3 tons+ of scrap iron or steel . the rear bumper would actually be a few inches off the ground . and yes steering sucked .

young and dump and wanted every trip to count . before they ( laws ) got serious on a 3/4 ton truck only suppose to haul 3/4 ton 😁

I wasn't upset even a little, and everything connected to the spare was gone! I was fascinated that someone went through the trouble of unbolting it, this was on a GMC 2500HD, with 10 ply tires. It probably did weigh 100lbs or so.

The spare is underneath the expedition, had to do that in the heat of a Louisiana summer, on the shoulder of I10 a few years ago. Ford factory jack, and tire tools are absolute garbage. That will be the first thing I check before I buy another Ford. I'll walk if it's got the same 💩 tire tools!

I find it fascinating that you have a security cable for your spare tire in the bed . . . but not one for the 1/2 dozen pieces of 2x6, which are probably worth more than the tire.

    What spare?😀

one other cheap purchase was a 4-way lug wrench, I slide it under the passenger seat. another one of those hope you never have to use it, but if you do it sure beats the factory crowbar type lug wrench..........

  • Sam06Sam06 Member Posts: 21,244 ✭✭✭✭

I checked mine a few months ago when I found my rear tire was flat with a big hunk of steel stuck in it. I had to get a breaker bar on a 4 way to get the lug nuts off. Getting the spare from under the truck was an awesome experience! I have had more fun on an obstacle course. I can imagine doing it on the side of the road in the rain or maybe on a red ant hill......Hell yea!!

Yep the spare was 15 years old and a little low on air. I think I had checked it maybe 5 years ago and put some air in it. It was round and it did roll so it did its job.

bought a use car last winter, looked in the owners book for the location of the jack & spare............it didn't come with either, just a can of fix-a-flat and a 12v air compressor 😯
