Need some fishing line help

bpostbpost Member Posts: 32,669 ✭✭✭✭

I took the reels out and pulled off all the 10 year old mono line. I have braided line to replace some of it, one roll of 30 pound mono and some fluro line.

The braided in so thin I am worried about having the spool only 1/2 full. Do you use a backer in the spool for braided line?

What is the best knot for braided line?

I usually run 50 yards or so of 20# mono on a reel before tying in the braid. That still leaves room for 100 yards or so of braid. After a season, I flip the braid to get double the use out of it.

I use a uni-uni knot most of the time to connect braid to mono or fluoro. There are many good YouTube vids featuring other good knots like the Yucatan, Alberto, Red Phillips, GT knot, and others. The Alberto and Yucatan are easy to tie.

    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

only bad thing about the braided is when you go to change lures, you can't , or I can't bite it intwo, have to have scissors or knife. otherwise it is tough for a fish to break......

I have not fished in a long time but I always used gold Stren mono. Easy for me to see when trolling, no the fish didn't shy from it, I caught fish in crystal clear lakes like Tahoe, and I caught lots of fish and the line never let me down. I do seem to remember having a 6/0 Pen with braid that I used for sharks off the piers. I don't know if Sten is even made anymore.

...I switched from mono to Spidewire years ago...I just take my reels to Bass Pro, buy the line and let them fill the spool with their machine...they don't charge anything to spool up your line, simple and quick...Ive never had a problem or been disappointed with Spiderwire...

My musky reels are the only ones I use braid on, and I do use a mono backer.

Yes Ricci! Stren is still around. I use it along with a couple other brands in the 4 to 6 pound test for my ultra light set ups. I enjoy a good fighting fish on the line and have taken quite a few that are bigger than my line is rated for.

These days I have been doing a lot of trout fishing in my areas creeks, and rivers. Nice pan sized Brookies, Rainbows, and Browns. Darn good for making the "English" breakfasts my granddad used to fix me and got me HOOKED on both fishing and eating!

B'Wood, for your ultra-light, try some 6-lb Nanofil. It has the diameter of 2-lb mono but breaks at between eight and 10 pounds - and casts like there's no line attached to your lure at all. Its only drawback is that it frays easily, so you need very smooth line guides and try to avoid rocks and stuff.

I use 10lb Nanofil on my medium-weight spinning rods. Nanofil is really "slickery" stuff so it needs good knots. With 10lb Fluoro leader, I use five turns of the fluoro and seven turns of Nanofil in my uni-uni knots and have no problems.

Don't want to be a pain in the azzz but should'nt this be in the fishing topic? Only saying cause I've seen I think William posts about a great day fishing and it got moved there... he wasn't asking about fishing tackle just sharing...

Yes, but probably wouldn't have gotten this many replies this fast of a time period!
