What Zero do you use for the High Power Rifle

I know most deer are shot fairly close but went with a little longer range setup than a 200 Zero.

Many years ago ,I settled on 150 to 165 grain bullets in my 30-06 and 308 hunting loads .both are set up to shoot 1&1/2 to 2 inches high at 100 yards .Puts me minute of deer at the distances I shoot at .I rarely shoot past 250 yards .This has served me well for the past 30 years

depends on caliber and ammo. I use 200 yards for 130gr 270 and 139 gr 7mm-08. both shoot about the same, 1.5 inch high at 100, dead on at 200, then 3-4 in low at 300. Then you see the diff between the 7mm-08 and 270. 7mm-08 drops off faster after 300 yards. I dont remember exacts after 300 because i RARELY shoot that far, and never when hunting.

I'm a 2" high at 100 yds. guy. Most of my shots are 75 yards or less. I have never taken a long range shot so 2" high at 100 yards works for me.

I never shoot at a running deer. I always use some form of rest, often a small tree or tree branch. To me, a long shot would be 150 yards but as I said earlier my shots are close. I have studied deer anatomy so I know where to place my bullet and I review my deer anatomy chart several times during deer season.

As a result when I pull the trigger, I walk out to gather up my deer. I'm not saying I am a fantastic shot. I would bet 90 % of all the hunters on this forum could make the same shots I make with the same results. I think it is the humane thing to do to put a deer down as instantaneously as possible. The thing that is different about me is I am very, very careful with my shot as I will not hurry my shot. If the deer moves off before I shoot, no problem. Another deer will be along either later that day or one of my next hunts. Gee golly, I get to spend my time watching nature from my deer blind!! Many of my best hunts I never saw a deer!!

    I use a 200 yard zero.

Some will die in hot pursuit
    And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
    While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
    Coming down the mountain

Have mine set for a 400 zero

I zero at 100 yards for deer hunting. Wisc. brush and wood needs no more.

POA @ 100 yards. Center of scope is 2" above bore. Last four antelope I harvested were all less than 100 yards.

Last one, and the largest body one I have ever harvested, was art 25 yards. Longer shots I figure 300 yrs 10" 400 yards

20". I don't like to harvest a game animal farther than 150 yards. I do not like to chase after a wounded animal.

I have harvested an antelope at 442yds, but conditions were perfect, and I know my rifle and the distance,

This was done with a 25 whelen by the way.

    Good hunting to all.

2" low at 100 yards, the same amount that the scope is over the bore. The 270 Winchester shoots so flat that it's like a laser beam. If I set it dead on at 100 by the time it hits 400 it'd be way over their backs.

My 7-08 Remington Model Seven is “zeroed” at about 50 yds and1 1/2” high at 100.

The bullet is rising and then falling so I would put another zero at around 150 and that gives me a hold on the vitals from 20-175 ish. I will not shoot over 180 Over 200 and I wait because of wind and spin drift after 150 ,

ARs are zeroed at 100 Yards, except for one which is at 200.

I keep the 50 BMGs zeroed at 200, but re-set to 500 when shooting longer distances. Never want to shoot high at a shorter range. Word is the 50 BMG round will travel a good way if one shoots above the berm.

Those mil dots above the cross hairs work fine also for close shots. Kyle kept his 300 Win Mag zeroed at 500 yd.

At 599 yards you would be shooting over everything where most animals are killed?

  • roswellnativeroswellnative Member Posts: 10,195 ✭✭✭✭

No wonder whenever anybody "Borrows" a rifle they miss. I've see more debate on zero than a glock 1911 shootout with 9mm vs 45 thrown in

1/1/2 low at 100 , 2" low at 100! how could this be? , I subscribe to the short action school and smaller blasts won't kick me out of a stand. I have no shots over 200 at my hunting grounds

"2" low at 100! how could this be?"

It could be sarcasm with a hint of pot stirring...

    Sure miss that green font!

200 yard zero on a 270, 300 yards would be 7-8 inches , optimum for crosshairs hold all day

270 cal with a 400 yard zero , so that trophy steps out at 175... do you put the crosshairs on his back ridge or belly line ? Think fast, o the deer snorts and is gone by the time

if the bullet starts at 1 1/2 inch low at muzzle and is 1 1/2 low at 100 ( ( insert no zero ) ) I would estimate a 200 shot would be a foot low , that's a dead mud puddle under a big buck vital hold , I'm not ever borrowing any buddy's gun again, unless it's a iron sited 94
