Serial Numbers....

VillagegunVillagegun Member Posts: 2

I'm looking at a rather expensive (to me) gun on Gun Broker. I looked carefully and I see no pictures of th serial number. (There should be as many as 3) All that's listed is the year it was manufactured.

I messaged him and asked if he could provide the serial number. He sent me the year. I messaged him again and politely asked for the serial number.

He messaged back "why?"

As stated earlier, this isn't a cheap gun. I feel there are several reasons for wanting a serial number first being to make sure it's not stolen. Another of course is old S/N guns can have a higher value. (also it's possible the gun has mismatched parts of course)

Have any of you folks come across this type of seller? He has been on here for a while.

I would be very interested in your opinions.

Thanks folks

Some people are skeptical of giving out the SN before the sale. I guess they are afraid that someone else could report it stolen and cause an issue.

Maybe give it except the last two digits and see if he would do that. And explain to the person that you want to make sure it is matched. Seems fair.

Consider his response "A RED FLAG".

Do not deal with this person. Ever.

I agree with nmyers. I deal in high end shotguns and anyone that refuses specific pictures or information is definitely someone not to deal with. Many reputable sellers now such as LF are including pictures of serial #s , proof marks as well as any other markings in their initial photos.

We have had many messages since I made this post. As Red Neck Andy says, basically he said people can and have used serial numbers to put our fraudulent claims and posts. I absolutely understand why he does it now. I had a guy on Florida Gun Trader try and see me a Python (nasty word) My apologies that I know for a fact was hot.

FYI, he did send me the number, said he trusted me. I think me knowing Jim King helped.

All is good! Thank you all for your comments.
