Mysterious Traffic Counters?

I've never seen these before. I guess they're traffic counters? I looked the company up and they are seismic monitors. They are placed along one of the most rural stretches of highway in Mississippi, about ten yards apart. Must be thousands of them. Ones without antenna are along the rural side roads where most roads turn to dirt. With or without an antenna they have a long (about 3 foot) probe driven into the ground. I can't imagine our state D.O.T. spending this kind of money out in the boonies for a traffic survey, and nobody seems to know anything. I know they are often used in oil exploration? Anybody got black helicopters and tin foil hat theories?

the ones they used to use on our road when we were growing up were like the old hoses at the gas station that dinged when you ran over them. we used to jump on the hose and the little box would click, on the way home from school us kids would stand there for 10 minutes or better jumping up and down, our road did end up getting blacktopped, it had been tar and chipped, I allways wondered if our jumping got the car count high enough for the blacktop or if the state just did it...............
booger if you are really curious just pee on one of the boxes and see what happens......or change the red and blue leads around
...The NGA (National Geologic Administration) places them along a seismic crack, where the earth is likely to split in half, into two pieces... actually I have no idea what they are...
I’m guessing Seismic sensors.
Tin foil hat locators my guess.
Pick it up and take it home with you, you'll soon know exactly what it is and why its there....there will be no second guessing. Do let us know what you find out 😀

Just cut the wires loose, take them ALL home , then wait for the owners to show up. You can ask them. Straight from the horses mouth is always best! 😁
I'd bet on seismic sensors. Grew up in oil country and back in the 60's they had to string a huge mess of wires to connect everything when they were looking for oil.
One night one of their trucks full of cables of wire ran off the divided highway and scattered wire for half a mile. Entire median was covered.
Gather as many as you can booger, then put them on an auction. You'll be rich! 😀
Someone is testing self driving cars?
Targets?
Could be being used for seismic survey without the jug lines, but there would need to be a vibrator truck involved, I'm guessing they are monitoring something.
Mule
go light some firecrakers by them 🤣
My guess was seismic sensors, too. And being next to the highway, perhaps that's how they set Load Limits for heavy trucks.
Why would anyone be trying to count traffic with sensors designed for measuring seismic activity? Oh wait, they wouldn't.

They are counting the door to door covid folks that walk by
I've asked around but nobody knows. A thousand or more along the right of way of a highway and po dunk roads. They've been there a week, I wonder how many will come up missing?
Not counting traffic, Mr P. I think they're measuring the vibrations made by heavy traffic. Using a lot of them covers varied terrain and soil types, slope, road materials, etc.
"Choot em!" 😁
My best guess after reading all these posts is somebody is looking for oil or gas.... being near the road is probably because they don't have the rights to go on property...yet, I'd say a fishing expedition. But hey what do I know, I only got two NG wells on my property that I have no rights too.
I guess that makes sense.

Unless plainly marked with ownership and "do not disturb", I'd pull 'em up and take 'em home just to see if someone came looking for them.
Tap an SOS on them with a rubber mallet at regular intervals ... imagine the monitors reaction
