A great job and a local bear

I drove out to the lake three weeks ago to see how the fishing was. On the way I drove along the Chilkoot river and made a picture of a guy with a great job. He is counting Sockeye Salmon at a fish weir as they return to the lake to spawn. Later in the season, however the job can get a little too exciting as the area around the weir gets pretty well covered up with Brown Bears. One of which I watched eating dandelions as I drove home. I do love Alaska. It's a great place to live.

Nice. I drove up to a trailhead up on the mountain tonight for a looksee and there were two cars full of tourists up there, putting on hiking boots and prepping backpacks. I struck up a conversation, where ya from? Oh, nice. You been here before? Never? So you ever see a brown bear in the wild? Oh no, never ... that would be a deal breaker for me. So, what if I told you there was one right there, just up the mountain? And I pointed... big fat brownie sitting in a meadow of bear grass watching them. They all turned and looked.

As expected, one group got right back in their car and left. The other couple went on up the trail, with their dog off leash. Hope I don't read about them tomorrow.
